The 'Second Shift' Is Not Why Women Avoid News
Women are more likely than men to avoid political and economic news, but the reasons for this behaviour are linked less to structural inequality or family-related stress than to personal attitudes and the emotional perception of news content. This conclusion was reached by HSE researchers after analysing data from a large-scale survey of more than 10,000 residents across 61 regions of Russia. The study findings have been published in Woman in Russian Society.

Связь религиозности и рождаемости в России на фоне других европейских стран: эффект социального контекста

Мониторинг общественного мнения: Экономические и социальные перемены. 2023. № 2. С. 103–126.
Pavlyutkin I., Пруцкова Е. В., Борисова О. Н.

The differences across religions and regions of Europe are growing against the background of secularization processes and the weakening connection between religiosity and fertility. This causes interest in the factors responsible for the strengthening or weakening of the connection between religiosity and fertility. Based on data from three waves of the European Values Study (1999, 2008, 2018) in 39 countries, this study analyzes the role of the social context and religious socialization in explaining the specifics of the relationship between religiosity and childbearing for Russia and other post-Soviet countries with the dominance of the Orthodox population in comparison with other regions of Europe. The results of a multilevel regression analysis show that the level of primary religious socialization (regular attendance at religious services at the age of 12 years old) and a supportive religious context (the average level of religiosity in the country) increase the connection between individual religiosity and the number of children. This explains the weak relationship between religiosity and fertility in post-Soviet countries with the dominance of the Orthodox population. Western European countries, which today are considered the center of secularization processes, still have significant “foci” of the institutional influence of religion on fertility, associated with family and educational institutions. Eastern European and post-Soviet countries, despite the observed process of the “religious revival” in the 1990s and 2000s, did not form developed institutions of religious socialization responsible for family lifestyle. This is reflected in demographic models of connection between religiosity and fertility.

Demographic Momentum and Fertility Responses to Pronatalist Policies: The Case of Ethnic Minorities in Russia
Kazenin K., Sergei Zakharov, Billingsley S., Population, space and place 2026 Vol. 32 No. 2 Article e70241
Russia's Maternal Capital policy initially increased total fertility rates, stimulating much discussion on whether it would result in more births or only earlier births. Effects of that policy upon different ethnic groups within Russia, however, have not received systematic attention. Varying demographic, socioeconomic and cultural characteristics of ethnic groups in Russia provide a unique opportunity ...

Retention of Emotional and Socio-Emotional Information in Working Memory: EEG Functional Connectivity Study
Kochetkova E., Machinskaya R., Human Physiology 2025 Vol. 51 No. 6 P. 580–590
Growing evidence suggests the specific systems for emotional information maintenance and processing in working memory, highlighting the role of cognitive domains in emotional awareness. The question of neural basis of social-emotional processing in working memory remains open. We hypothesized that the neural systems supporting working memory for emotional processing may rely on shared ‘core’ networks ...

Аллородительство как фактор сохранения высокой рождаемости в Тропической Африке
Ustyuzhanin V., Zinkina J. V., Korotayev A., Журнал социологии и социальной антропологии 2026 Т. 29 № 1 С. 228–258
The high fertility rates that persist in Tropical African countries are a kind of anomaly, since other developing countries had lower fertility rates when having similar socio-economic development indicators — phenomenon dubbed “African pronatalism” in Western demography. Meanwhile, the lag in fertility transition contributed greatly to Africa's economic backwardness since independence, which is why the ...

Тенденции региональной дифференциации рождаемости при втором демографическом переходе в некоторых странах
Stadnik N., Демографическое обозрение 2023 Т. 10 № 2 С. 18–40
Regional fertility differentiation is a significant factor of regional inequality in the long term. As previous studies show, the first demographic transition in developed countries, which was accompanied by the development of public institutions and means of communication, resulted in a surge in regional fertility differentiation followed by an unprecedented decrease. In this study, an attempt ...

Novel measures in Russian family and demographic policy include support for women who have given birth while pursuing vocational education. This is driven by the government’s concerns about the postponement of motherhood, and by a desire to reduce the risks of economic vulnerability for this group of women with children. In this paper we examine ...

Cross-Nationally, Non-Probability Web Surveys Demonstrate Poorer DemographicCoverage and Yield More Liberal Estimates of Public Opinion than F2F Surveys
Korsunava V., Sokolov B., / Series OSF "SocArXiv". 2025.
Non-probability web surveys offer several advantages over face-to-face (F2F) interviews—they are cheaper, faster, more accessible, and reduce interviewer effects and desirability bias. As such, they are increasingly popular in both academic and commercial research. However, they often yield demographically biased samples, raising concerns about the accuracy of the resulting public opinion estimates. Most studies on ...
