‘I Would Like My Research to Help Make the World a Calmer and Better Place
Whatever task Saraa Ali, Junior Research Fellow at the Laboratory of Methods for Big Data Analysis (LAMBDA) of the AI and Digital Science Institute (HSE Faculty of Computer Science), is working on, she thinks about how it can benefit people. She told the Young Scientists of HSE University project about her large family, diagnosing three-phase motors, and her dream of building a children’s home in her native country.

‘The Peak of Stupidity and ‘The Valley of Despair: HSE Economists Propose an Explanation for the Dunning–Kruger Effect
The Dunning–Kruger effect, which describes a sharp surge in self-confidence among beginners followed by an equally rapid decline as they gain experience, can be explained by the nature of the learning process and the acquisition of new knowledge. This conclusion was reached by Andrey Vorchik of the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences together with independent researcher Murat Mamyshev. They developed a mathematical model of learning and demonstrated how subjective confidence is formed and changes as knowledge accumulates, as well as how teachers can reduce the ‘valley of despair’ experienced by learners.

‘I Like Self-Fulfilling Prophecies
Andrey Vorchik studies happiness, delivers popular science lectures, and believes that science should address social issues as well. In an interview for the Young Scientists of HSE University project, he spoke about how emotions influence decision-making, the Bermuda Triangle formed by the bathroom, refrigerator, and bed, and the ideal formula for education.

Neural networks and satellite images-based shrub tundra landscape study: phenomena with fuzzy geometric and categorical boundaries
Derkacheva A., Frost G., Ermokhina K. et al., , in: 2023 International Conference on Machine Intelligence for GeoAnalytics and Remote Sensing (MIGARS).: IEEE, 2023. P. 1–4.
Many studies using convolutional neural networks, including in the field of satellite images, are aimed at recognizing clearly defined objects, such as cars or individual trees. Here we present the first results on mapping the growth stage of tundra shrubs, which is a ‘‘fuzzy’’ target for a network: there are no obvious geometric boundaries of ...

Whole-canopy net ecosystem exchange and water use efficiency in an intermittent-light environment -- dynamic approach
Kivalov S., Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024), 2024.
An observed 20-30% increase in forest net ecosystem exchange (NEE) on partly cloudy days is often attributed to there being more uniform canopy illumination by diffuse radiation when clouds are present. However, the sky on such days is typically populated by fair-weather cumulus clouds, bringing dynamically changing shadow-to-light conditions on the order of minutes to ...

Manivelan S. V., Srinivasan S., Thamilmaran K. et al., Physical Review E - Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics 2026 Vol. 114 No. 1 Article 014217
This study investigates the dynamical origins and statistical properties of extreme events (EEs) in a diffusively coupled theoretical Brusselator system, extending from pairwise interactions to globally coupled networks. Statistically, the emergence of EEs is characterized by heavy-tailed probability density functions and exponential interevent interval distributions, alongside an analysis of the complementary cumulative distribution function and ...

Unique morphology and ecology lifestyle of a new craniiform brachiopod from the Upper Ordovician of Estonia (Baltica)
Madison A., Plandin F., Kuzmina T. et al., Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology 2026 Vol. 697 Article 113864
Unlike most other brachiopods, craniiforms lack a prominent pedicle, cement to a hard substrate by their ventral valve, and thereby can be easily distinguished in paleontological materials. In this study, we describe a new genus and species from the Porkuni Regional Stage of Northeastern Estonia (Baltica), corresponding to the lower part of the Hirnantian Stage ...

Does the pedicle exist in craniiform brachiopods?
Plandin F., Temereva E., Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society 2025 Vol. 205 No. 2 Article zlaf139
Although Brachiopoda represent a relatively small phylum, they exhibit significant morphological diversity. One of the central issues in understanding the evolution of the ancestral brachiopod body plan pertains to the homologies among body compartments across the different brachiopod subphyla: Craniiformea, Linguliformea, and Rhynchonelliformea. In this context, the pedicle stands out as one of the most ...

Disentangling hydroclimatic controls on drought-induced vegetation productivity loss at the basin scale across China
Yin X., Wu Y., Kivalov S. et al., Journal of Hydrology 2026 Vol. 677 No. A Article 135843
As a frequent extreme event under global climate change, drought significantly threatens the net primary productivity (NPP) of terrestrial ecosystems. Although numerous studies have reported drought-induced declines in NPP, the hydroclimatic mechanisms behind remain insufficiently understood. The strong interdependence among temperature, precipitation, and water availability has made it challenging to quantify their independent effects on ...

Assessment of vegetation carrying capacity at the basin-scale using an improved SWAT model
An S., Wu Y., Luo X. et al., Catena 2026 Vol. 263 Article 109767
Vegetation restoration represents a highly effective strategy for offsetting carbon emissions, mitigating climate change, and enhancing the quality of the eco-environment. Despite the ecological benefits, the large-scale ‘Grain-for-Green’ program in China has caused unintended hydrological consequences, threatening the sustainability of regional water resources in this arid and semi-arid region. Therefore, it is crucial to understand ...

Zhang G., Wu Y., Lu X. et al., Journal of Environmental Management 2026 Vol. 401 Article 128981
The ‘Grain for Green’ (GFG) project is a key ecological restoration initiative in the Loess Plateau. The land use changes induced by GFG project have the potential to alter the spatial distribution of soil organic carbon (SOC), yet its impact on the lateral loss of SOC was not well understood or insufficiently quantified. This study ...

Tararushkin E., Glushak A., Rudmin M. et al., Applied Clay Science 2026 Vol. 291 Article 108288
Phengite is one of the important hydrous phyllosilicate minerals capable of transporting water and potassium in subducting slabs down to the Earth’s upper mantle. Being able to incorporate significant amounts of ammonium in its structure, phengite is also a major contributor to the nitrogen cycle in subduction zones. Employing classical molecular dynamic simulations with the ...

Molecular dynamics simulations refine the pathogenicity of ACVRL1 kinase domain variants by quantifying impacts on ATP binding in pulmonary arterial hypertension
Borovikova I., Uporov I., Okhrimenko G. et al., Journal of Structural Biology 2026 Vol. 218 No. 2 Article 108315
Single amino acid substitutions in the ATP-binding domain of ACVRL1, a key receptor in the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling pathway, are frequently classified as variants of uncertain significance (VUS), complicating molecular diagnosis for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT). Since aberrant ATP binding disrupts downstream SMAD1/5/8 phosphorylation, we employed molecular dynamics ...

Emergence of Extreme Events in Weakly Coupled Autonomous Bonhoeffer–van der Pol Systems
Thangavel B., Kathamuthu T., Srinivasan S., International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos in Applied Sciences and Engineering 2026 Vol. 36 No. 09 Article 2630019
In this paper, we report, for the first time, that Extreme Events (EEs) can robustly emerge in autonomous, weakly coupled Bonhoeffer–van der Pol oscillators, challenging the prevailing notion that strong interaction and external drive are necessary for such rare, large-amplitude bursts. Our central finding is a novel dynamical route to EEs: a transition from quasi-periodic torus dynamics to ...
