The 'Second Shift' Is Not Why Women Avoid News
Women are more likely than men to avoid political and economic news, but the reasons for this behaviour are linked less to structural inequality or family-related stress than to personal attitudes and the emotional perception of news content. This conclusion was reached by HSE researchers after analysing data from a large-scale survey of more than 10,000 residents across 61 regions of Russia. The study findings have been published in Woman in Russian Society.

Preserving Rationality in a Period of Turbulence
The HSE International Laboratory for Logic, Linguistics and Formal Philosophy studies logic and rationality in a transformed world characterised by a diversity of logical systems and rational agents. The laboratory supports and develops academic ties with Russian and international partners. The HSE News Service spoke with the head of the laboratory, Prof. Elena Dragalina-Chernaya, about its work.

‘All My Time Is Devoted to My Dissertation
Ilya Venediktov graduated from the Master’s programme at the HSE Tikhonov Moscow Institute of Electronics and Mathematics through the combined Master’s–PhD track and is currently studying at the HSE Doctoral School of Engineering Sciences. At present, he is undertaking a long-term research internship at the University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei, where he is preparing his dissertation. In this interview, he explains how an internship differs from an academic mobility programme, discusses his research topic, and describes the daily life of a Russian doctoral student in China.

Experience-dependent neuroplasticity in the hippocampus of bilingual young adults
Gallo F., Voits T., Rothman J. et al., eNeuro 2025 Vol. 12 No. 6 Article ENEURO.0128-25.2025
Models of experience-dependent neuroplasticity predict that the acquisition and extensive use of a new skill trigger a nonlinear trajectory of neurostructural modifications, where initial expansion of relevant brain areas subsequently (once the skill is acquired) gives way to volumetric renormalization. Such predictions also apply in the domain of language during learning and/or simultaneous management of ...

Functional segregation of rostral and caudal hippocampus in associative memory
Vorobyova A., Feurra M., Pavone E. F. et al., Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 2025 Article 1509163
Introduction: The hippocampus plays a crucial role in episodic memory. Given its complexity, the hippocampus participates in multiple aspects of higher cognitive functions, among which are semantics-based encoding and retrieval. However, the “where,” “when” and “how” of distinct aspects of memory processing in the hippocampus are still under debate. Methods: Here, we employed a visual associative memory task that involved ...

Reduced grey matter volume of amygdala and hippocampus is associated with the severity of autistic symptoms and language abilities in school-aged children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: an exploratory study
Arutiunian V., Davydova E., Pereverzeva D. et al., Brain Structure and Function 2023 Vol. 228 No. 6 P. 1573–1579
The core symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are impairments in social interaction/communication and the presence of stereotyped and repetitive behaviour. The amygdala and hippocampus are involved in core functions in the “social brain” and, thus, may be of particular interest in ASD. Previous studies demonstrated inconsistent results, revealing both increased and reduced volume of ...

Global cognitive graph properties dynamics of hippocampal formation
Sorokin K., Зайцев А. В., Левин А. М. et al., / Series arxiv:q-bio.NC "arxiv Quantitative Biology". 2023.
In the present study we have used a set of methods and metrics to build a graph of relative neural connections in a hippocampus of a rodent. A set of graphs was built on top of time-sequenced data and analyzed in terms of dynamics of a connection genesis. The analysis has shown that during the ...

Topology of cognitive maps
Sorokin K., Ayzenberg A., Анохин К. В. et al., / Series Computer Science "arxiv.org". 2022.
In present paper we test different approaches to reconstructing the topology of the physical space from neural activity data in A1 fields of mice brains, in particular, having a Cognitome-focused approach in mind. Animals were placed in different new environments and discovered them while their physical and neural activity was recorded. We discuss possible approaches ...

Hippocampal Interneuronal alpha 7 nAChRs Modulate Theta Oscillations in Freely Moving Mice
Gu Z., Smith K., Alexander G. et al., Cell Reports 2020 Vol. 31 No. 10 Article 107740
Muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (mAChRs) are critically involved in hippocampal theta generation, but much less is known about the role of nicotinic AChRs (nAChRs). Here we provide evidence that α7 nAChRs expressed on interneurons, particularly those in oriens lacunosum moleculare (OLM), also regulate hippocampal theta generation. Local hippocampal infusion of a selective α7 nAChR antagonist significantly ...

A serious game to explore human foraging in a 3D environment
Kristjansson A., Plos One 2019 P. 1–21
Traditional search tasks have taught us much about vision and attention. Recently, several groups have begun to use multiple-target search to explore more complex and temporally extended “foraging” behaviour. Many of these new foraging tasks, however, maintain the simplified 2D displays and response demands associated with traditional, single-target visual search. In this respect, they may ...

Topology of nerves and formal concepts
Ayzenberg A., / Series arXiv "math". 2019.
The general goal of this paper is to gather and review several methods from homotopy and combinatorial topology and formal concepts analysis (FCA) and analyze their connections. FCA appears naturally in the problem of combinatorial simplification of simplicial complexes and allows to see a certain duality on a class of simplicial complexes. This duality generalizes ...

Navigation Patterns and Scent Marking: Underappreciated Contributors to Hippocampal and Entorhinal Spatial Representations?
Lebedev M., Пимашкин А. С., Ossadtchi A., Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience 2018 Vol. 12 No. 98 P. 1–8
According to the currently prevalent theory, hippocampal formation constructs and maintains cognitive spatial maps. Most of the experimental evidence for this theory comes from the studies on navigation in laboratory rats and mice, typically male animals. While these animals exhibit a rich repertoire of behaviors associated with navigation, including locomotion, head movements, whisking, sniffing, raring ...

Commentary: Spatial Olfactory Learning Contributes to Place Field Formation in the Hippocampus
Ossadtchi A., Lebedev M., Frontiers in Systems Neuroscience 2018 Vol. 12 No. 8 P. 1–5
The discovery of place-representing neurons in the hippocampal formation has been recognized by the Nobel Committee as a paradigm shift in Neuroscience (Burgess, 2014). Here we call attention to an innovative paper of particular note (Zhang and Manahan-Vaughan, 2015) that added important findings to this field of study. Zhang and Manahan-Vaughan investigated the contribution of olfactory ...
