Наука и сенсация: феномен Капитолийской волчицы
The article is devoted to the discussion about the time of creation of the famous statue of the Capitoline She-wolf (Lupa Capitolina), initiated by the book Carruba A. M. La Lupa Capitolina: un bronzo medieval. Roma: De Luca editori d’arte, 2006. Special attention is paid to the reflection of scientific disputes in the mass media. The discussion turned out to be very interesting from the point of view of the methodology of scientific research, because here the techniques and methods of three scientific fields (art history, history, natural sciences) converged at one point. Of course, the results of natural-science analyzes played a special role in creating the sensation. It is noted that for all the apparent accuracy of the scientific methods of natural sciences, there is no unanimity of opinion about their results, which does not allow us to speak about irrefutable evidence of the medieval dating of the She-Wolf. Moreover, these data point to the XI–XII centuries, which refute the conclusions of A. M. Carruba herself, who attributed the creation of the statue to an earlier, Carolingian epoch (VIII–IX centuries).
