Methods and structure of the study. We analyzed the articles published in the leading international journals in the last 10 years (e.g., "Sports, Education and Society"). The works were selected according to the following criteria: 1) focus on one of the functions of the university (e.g., teaching); 2) aspect of sustainable development. Results of the study and conclusions. A brief analysis of the literature sources devoted to the sustainability of higher education in the field of sports physical education, and recreation enabled to reveal 4 main dimensions of this problem. Firstly, each dimension is multidisciplinary. Secondly, these dimensions are interrelated. Thirdly, sustainable development requires an interdisciplinary approach. Despite this, the reviewed works are problem-oriented and scattered in different disciplines. Interdisciplinary dialogue on the subject is thus difficult. Sustainable development is a global issue, but scientific discussions at the international level are limited. Although this was not the focus of the current work, it can be noted that most of the studies reviewed had been carried out in the developed countries. Individual studies are rather focused on "sports for development". Russia’s researches are not presented. The practical value of this analysis lies in the acceptance of the principles of consistency in sustainable development. The scientific debate shows that such human sciences as history, sociology, culturology, and philosophy are particularly important for increasing students' awareness and their ability to reflect the complex nature of sustainable development.
