Bifactor models reflect the current popularity of composite tests, which allow for a report of the general and specific test scores. This paper proposes a classification of bifactor models from the item response theory paradigm. The classification is based on four criteria: (1) the number of parameters per item, (2) link function, (3) structure of thresholds in polytomous items, (4) obliqueness of persons' dimensions.
