HSE Scientists Train Neural Network to 'Hear' Faults in Electric Motors
Researchers at the AI and Digital Science Institute of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have developed a new method—the Signature-Guided Data Augmentation (SGDA) framework—that achieves 99% accuracy in motor fault detection and 86% accuracy in fault classification. The application of this approach can reduce industrial equipment repair costs, minimise downtime, and improve production safety. The study results have been published in Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence.

'The Humanities Serve as a Conscience'
Maria Mizernaia studies Soviet literature and the history of book publishing. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, she discusses plans to publish a novel about besieged Leningrad, AI-provoked reflections on what it means to be human, and how novels can help satisfy our dopamine hunger.

Is It Possible to Predict a Citys Life Based on the Shape of Its Neighbourhoods?
Is it possible to predict, based on the configuration of streets and buildings, where a café will open or where traffic congestion will occur? Participants in the Spatial Analysis and Modelling of Urban Processes research and study group use open data and machine learning to identify universal patterns. Alexander Sheludkov and Eduard Somov discuss the purpose of comparing cities, the need for new forms of urban statistics, and how open data is transforming approaches to urban studies.

How Emotions Induce Charitable Giving. A Psychophysiological Study
Anna Shepelenko, Vladimir Kosonogov, Anna Shestakova, Social Psychology 2023 Vol. 54 No. 5 P. 261–270
Emotions play a pervasive role in determining advertising effectiveness. However, it is still a controversial question as to whether pleasant or unpleasant advertisements are more effective in attracting donations. We recorded self-reported valence and arousal, as well as physiological activity (skin conductance, heart rate, and facial electromyography), while 54 participants watched affective pictures of dogs ...

Review of psychophysiological and psychotherapeutic studies of stress using virtual reality technologies
V. V. Kosonogov, K. V. Efimov, Z. K. Rakhmankulova et al., Neuroscience and Behavioral Physiology 2023 Vol. 53 No. 1 P. 81–91
This review addresses the use of virtual reality technologies in the psychophysiology and psychotherapy of stress. Studies using virtual reality both to introduce subjects into a state of stress and to help reduce stress reactions are reviewed. Methods developed for treating patients suffering from stress-related disorders (in particular, PTSD and phobias) are described. In many ...

The review introduces the reader to modern psychophysiological approaches to the study of emotion regulation and briefly outlines the data obtained with the help of such approaches. Among the somatovegetative methods of studying the emotional state in the implementation of regulation, it is worth mentioning facial EMG, SGR, heart rate. These methods allow to quickly ...

Background: The role of modality-specific sensorimotor brain neural networks in higher-order cognition is a hotly debated question that remains unresolved. Studies that employ spatiotemporally precise neuroimaging tools such as MEG might potentially shed light onto this question and offer valuable techniques for translational research of various motor and cognitive disorders. Methods: We developed a novel paradigm using mismatch ...

Effects of improvisation training on student teachers’ behavioral, neuroendocrine, and psychophysiological responses during the Trier Social Stress Test
Seppanen S., Toivanen T., Makkonen T. et al., Adaptive Human Behavior and Physiology 2020 Vol. 6 P. 356–380
Objectives Teaching involves multiple performance situations, potentially causing psychosocial stress. Since the theater-based improvisation method is associated with diminished social stress, we investigated whether improvisation lessened student teachers’ stress responses using the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST; preparatory phase, public speech, and math task). Moreover, we studied the influence of interpersonal confidence (IC) – the ...

Utochkin I. S., Экспериментальная психология 2009 № 2 С. 16–30
This essay describes two experimental studies, which demonstrate the existence of «dead zones» in visual attention. The phenomenon of «dead zones» manifests in the task of finding and identifying changes, and is one example within the currently widely-studied field of change blindness - the inability to find and/or identify visual changes of an object in ...

Osokina E. S., Chernyshev B. V., Chernysheva E. G.,
