Полугодовые донесения губернских жандармских штаб-офицеров как источник по истории местного управления Российской империи 1830-х гг.
The article is devoted to the analysis of semi-annual reports of provincial gendarme staff officers as a source on the history of local government of the Russian Empire in the 1830s. The article examines the preconditions and circumstances of the appearance of the circular of the chief of gendarmes on February 8, 1832, which served as the starting point for the formation of gendarme reporting. The procedure for submitting reports and the specifics of their structure are considered. Special attention is paid to the gendarme characteristics of the governor’s corps and the highest provincial bureaucracy. The reports were received in the Third Section of His Imperial Majesty’s Own Chancellery and served as a source of information for the card index of provincial employees. Semi- annual reports are an important source on the history of local government in the pre- reform era, and at the same time, they have to be considered subjective as they reflect personal sympathies and antipathies of gendarmes and sometimes carry an echo of their confrontations with governors.
