The uranium riches of the Sahara and the Sahel are drawing the attention of various international players. Given the strategic nature of uranium as a natural resource and the lack of a free market for uranium, economic competition is acquiring a political dimension. France, whose mining companies have been operating in the region for decades, is fighting hard to retain its positions. Meanwhile, China, the United States, India, Russia and several other countries are trying to secure a share of Africa's uranium pie. An article by a senior scholar at the Institute for African Studies in Moscow analyses the positions of the key players on the continent, including the policies of the African governments.
