Приписка к Арабской Библии о межконфессиональном конфликте в Палестине в конце XVII в.
In this article a note in the Middle Arabic language is examined. It was attested before the Book of Job in the 2nd volume of the earliest copy of the complete Arabic Bible kept in the collection of the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences under the shelf-mark D 226. This note, the author of which remains unknown, deals with the seizure of the Holy Places in Jerusalem and Bethlehem by the Roman Catholics from the Greek Orthodox with consent of the Ottoman authorities. This event, which happened in AD 1690, is erroneously dated in the note two years earlier. In AD 1922 the text of the note was published by the Archimandrite Elijah from Alexandria in a version considerably revised in accordance with the rules of Classical Arabic grammar on the basis of an inaccurate copy taken in AD 1908 from the above-mentioned manuscript of the Arabic Bible conserved at that period in the monastery of Balamand near Tripoli in Northern Lebanon. As a result the contents of the note proved to be partly misrepresented, which influenced its translations into Greek and French. In the present article the original text of the note is edited for the first time with Russian translation and commentary and all the political and church figures mentioned in it are identified, including the Ambassador of France hidden under the nickname Zamaria (in all probability, a distorted form of “ce marquis”).
