The article deals with topical issues of teaching academic writing skills for university students in English classrooms. It is suggested that students’ research proposal might be considered as a basis for academic writing skills development. Students’ research activities properly utilized for the didactic purpose of teaching academic writing skills facilitate the application of the competence-based approach to teaching foreign languages, effective language skills acquisition and enhancement of students’ awareness of academic discourse features and their ability to create texts fully adjusted to academic context and purposes.
