The subject of the article is an analysis of the critical responses of the philologist Boris Tomashevsky (1890-1957), his сontribution to the activities of the "formal school" during the first half of the 1920s. Tomashevsky's reviews in the journals "Book and Revolution", "Russian Contemporary" and the newspaper "Life of Art" demonstrate the specifics of his position within the formalist camp (polemics with R. Jakobson. V. Zhirmunsky, B. Eikhenbaum and Y. Tynjanov), as well as important changes within philological scholarship (his reviews of works by such literary scholars of previous generations as V. Istrin, N. Kotlyarevsky among the others). The traditional features of Tomashevsky's scientific identity as a Pushkinist and verse scholar precisely in the mirror of journalistic polemics (with the poet V.Khodasevich, for example) especially clearly show the peculiarities of the cultural and intellectual innovation of Russian formalism.
