The article discusses the previously ignored parallels between The Same Old Story by I. A. Goncharov and a fragment of V. F. Odoyevsky’s unfinished novel Year 4338. Letters from Petersburg published in Issue 1 of Moskovsky Nabliudatel magazine in 1825. A detailed analysis of plot, motif, imagery similes between the two texts is provided, the literary and biographical circumstances of Goncharov becoming aware of Odoyevsky’s work are reconstructed. Irrespective of the status of the discovered parallel, the similes are instrumental for the novel description of the impact of the romantic prose and polemics in the periodicals of mid-1830s on the emergence of the realistic poetics and the problematics of critical discussions of the second half of the 1840s
