Det goda med att beskriva och studera dialekter, små och hotade språk är att dessa studier påminner människor om deras rötter. Förbindelse med det förflutna utgör en av de bestämmande sidorna i människans världsbild. När jag lade ut på Facebook i gruppen tillägnad Gammalsvenskby och Gammalsvenskbybor ett fragment ur min intervju med Lidia Utas (hon var en av dialekttalarna) svarade en person att hon försöker höra rösten bakom texten som om den hade varit från hennes föräldrar. Det är den personliga och sociala dimensionen i dialektstudier. Men naturligtvis finns det en rent vetenskaplig dimension. När man studerar obeskrivna språk och dialekter kan man få intressanta insikter i hur språk förändras. De kan vara nyttiga även i den allmännare, mer teoretiska, kontexten av lingvistik. I denna artikel ska jag berätta om så kallade semitalare av dialekten och några företeelser förknippade med den språkliga förändringen.
