Före flytten från Dagö i nuvarande Estland till Ryssland 1782 var dialekten i kontakt med estniska och under hela 1800-talet upp till mitten av 1900-talet var den i kontakt med tyska då det var flera tyska byar kring den svenska. Efter andra världskriget har det som kallas surzjik (övergångsvarietet mellen ryska och ukrainska) varit ett huvudspråk för alla invånare i byn. I denna artikel berättar Alexander Mankov om slaviska (ryska och ukrainska) lånord i Gammalsvenskbydialekten. Det var tema för hans föredrag vid konferensen »Endangered Languages and the Land. Mapping Landscapes of Multilingualism», Islands universitet, Reykjavik (23–25 augusti 2018).
