The present study analyses the markers of feminine identity that reflect the curr

ent tendencies of gender

ideology and language policy of the modern English

speaking society. The peculiarity of the approach employed

in the study is the comparative analysis of the most frequent markers of femininity in lexicographical resources of

XI century along with communicative contexts of the British media that are used to identify gender

semantic spheres; communicative contexts of the British newspaper ―The Independent‖ are considered to be the

markers, which construct the image of the modern woman and her social roles. T

he results of the study indicate

a shift in gender asymmetry towards linguistic equality, but at the same time, the results reveal the preservation of

androcentrism in the modern English language and speech.
