From Bonn to Bonn: One decade of international engagement in Post-Taliban Afghanistan

This article reviews and interprets the main landmarks of international military, civil and diplomatic engagement in Afghanistan in the first decade after the deposition of the Taliban regime. We identify four stages in this unfinished process: a moment of illusory stability (2001-2005); the intensification of the Taliban uprising (2006-2008); the apex of the conflict, under the strategy of counter-insurgency (2009-2011); and the current challenges of military transition and political reconciliation (2012-2014). We also reflect over the impact of the Afghan War upon multilateral statebuilding exercises.
