Live and Death of an Apis Bull: From the Second Persian Domination to Ptolemy’s Satrapy
The article analyses a number of sources (the inscription of the sarcophagus from Serapeum of Chabbash’s Year 2, the statements of Classical tradition Arr. Anab. III.1.4 and Diod. I.84.4), which, in author’s opinion, indicate the life of an Apis bull from ca. 336-335 B.C. to ca. 323-322 B.C. This bull was the contemporary of the early Macedonian time in Egypt: Alexander the Great took part in a rite honouring it; and its burial was handsomely sponsored by the Satrap Ptolemy. The part played by the Macedonian rulers in its cult shows their interest towards legitimating their power over Egypt according to its local tradition
