The 'Second Shift' Is Not Why Women Avoid News
Women are more likely than men to avoid political and economic news, but the reasons for this behaviour are linked less to structural inequality or family-related stress than to personal attitudes and the emotional perception of news content. This conclusion was reached by HSE researchers after analysing data from a large-scale survey of more than 10,000 residents across 61 regions of Russia. The study findings have been published in Woman in Russian Society.

Воспроизводство коллективной идентичности, или Зачем кубанскому казачеству нужны ритуальные коллективные действия

Журнал социологии и социальной антропологии. 2025. Т. 28. № 2. С. 7–32.
Пузанков И. А.

The social community of the Cossacks, as well as, in particular, the Kuban

army, becoming an increasingly prominent player in the socio-political field, is a fairly

relevant object for consideration from various research positions. The article is de-

voted to the dynamics of traditional (or non-traditional) collective actions of the Kuban

Cossacks, considered through the concepts of affectation, commemoration, performa-

tivity and ritual. This study analyzes various collective actions within the Cossack

community (parade, commemoration, circle, etc.), each of which serves both as a “work

-

shop” of construction and a stage for the manifestation of collective identity. In the

theoretical section, the main concepts used in the analysis of empirical material are

considered, and their interpretation is carried out in relation to the object of study

under consideration. The empirical part focuses on the analysis of performative and

ritual elements inherent in Cossack gatherings. The author deconstructs ritual collective

performances through the analysis of ethnographic observation data, emphasizing the

affective resonance and historical symbolism inherent in each action. Through affective

interaction, ritual performances and the resulting collective solidarity, participants are

involved in the (re) production of Cossack identity, relying on the rich cultural heritage

and collective memory of the community. The rituals studied, from donning tradi-

tional uniforms to reciting prayers and electing chieftains, play a key role in shaping

and consolidating the collective identity of the Cossacks and strengthening the sense

of belonging among the participants.

Based on some of the states of Sergey Zenkin’s article, I describe the relationship between affect and symbol. Affect has two sides — cognitive and non-cognitive. The latter manifests itself in unconscious reactions. Conscious affect is regulated by the communicative situation and the sociocultural environment. Sergey Zenkin describes two systems of meaning circulation. The first is ...

The author proposes a hypothesis of two types of mechanisms of social self-organization: its launch and maintenance of structural integrity. These are two fundamentally different mechanisms. Social self-organization requires four mandatory conditions: (1) a set of interacting elements (individuals), homogeneous in origin and creating, due to their common habitat, a behavioral population system; (2) the ...

Зябриков В. В., Mikirtumov I., Социологический журнал 2025 Т. 31 № 4 С. 175–191
In this article we question the relevance of Geert Hofstede’s opposition of individualism and collectivism in the era of digitalization. The mediatization of labor causes a blurring of the boundaries between the real and the virtual, the reduction of direct interactions leads to familiar affects losing their intensity. We correlate individualism with an affective assemblage ...

Emotions in Meaning-Making: Toward a Sociological Theory of Cathexis
Kurakin D., Sociological forum 2025 P. 1–12
The role of emotion in meaning-making remains undertheorized in cultural sociology. This article argues that emotions and affect are intrinsic to meaning-making and proposes cathexis—the attachment of emotions generated in social interaction to objects, symbols, and ideas—as the fundamental mechanism by which emotions co-constitute cultural meanings. Durkheim implied this constitutive role of affect in his theory ...

Aleksandrov G., Bondarenko D. M., Anthropos 2025 Vol. 120 No. 2 P. 533–547
Issues of race and memory in America are closely connected. Racial categories and racialized thinking are primarily integrated into the American culture through collective memory, and any conversation concerning race issues inevitably becomes a conversation at least partly about history. The major crises of the past few years have a pronounced connection to collective perceptions ...
