Scientists Create Open Dataset for Studying Concentration
A team of Russian researchers, including scientists from HSE University–St Petersburg, has developed the first open multimodal dataset containing recordings of brain activity, heart function, and video observations to help researchers understand what happens in the human brain during deep concentration. In the future, the dataset could accelerate the development of neural interfaces, rehabilitation technologies, and AI systems. The article has been published in Scientific Data.

‘Science Is Universal-It Knows No Borders
Fuad Aleskerov, Tenured Professor and Director of the International Centre of Decision Choice and Analysis at HSE University, together with his colleagues, has developed methods of network analysis in bibliometrics that have made it possible to identify patterns in the appearance and citation of publications in academic journals, as well as their influence on each other. When one or a number of studies are frequently cited by a wide range of journals, this is an indicator that the research is of high quality. By contrast, extensive cross-citation within a limited group of journals increases the likelihood of identifying a network of predatory publications.

Experiments involving participant’s response recording by way of pressing buttons are quite common. This simple method allows estimation of such crucial parameters as response time and response correctness. However, more detailed analysis of behavioral responses is needed in some cases. Crucial aspects within the cognitive control research field include the conflict before decision-making, error detection after response commission and internal uncertainty. The present research was carried out to validate and estimate the informativeness of a new response recording method using mouse tracking. Erroneous responses versus correct responses during performance of the auditory condensation task were analyzed and then compared with the results of a previous similar experiment where buttons were used for response recording. It was found that the time of starting mouse movements corresponds to response times measured by way of participants pressing a button. In addition, several parameters of mouse cursor trajectories were proposed as indirect measures of participant’s certainty, including mouse movement time, track curvature (deviation from a linear one), start angle and start velocity of mouse cursor, and finishing angle of response. The obtained results allow us to conclude that the response recording method using the mouse tracking technique provide highly informative behavioral data which can help to detect internal uncertainty. Thus, the new method of response recording appears to be very useful for cognitive control research.

Signayevskaya K., Gorbunova E. S.,

The effects of emotional distraction might differ depending on the valence and arousal of induced affective states. Nevertheless, insufficient complexity of a cognitive task might affect the ability of participants to allocate attention resources for the successful examination of emotional stimuli and task performance. This is why, in previous research, indicators of accuracy and response ...

Enhancing explainability in deepfake detection with graph attention networks
Aleksandr S. Pikul, Popov I., 2025 Vol. 32 No. 2 P. 73–82
Understanding how artificial intelligence models make decisions is important, especially for difficult tasks like detecting deepfakes, where it's not enough to just get a result – it needs to know why the model made that choice. Many current methods, like Shapley additive explanations (SHAP) and Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping (Grad-CAM), help explain these decisions, but ...

Innovation has long been at the center of debates in economics, management, and organizational studies. However, innovation is never free of uncertainty and risk. Every act of innovation implies a departure from established paths and a willingness to embrace the unknown. From the beginning it's never clear if there is an audience which appreciates the ...

Andrey Timashkov, Sarah Anderson, Oksana Zinchenko, Frontiers in Neuroscience 2025 Vol. 19 Article 1662272
The analysis revealed nine distinct activation clusters, revealing a comprehensive neural network involved in uncertainty processing. Key findings demonstrated predominant activations in the anterior insula (up to 63.7% representation), inferior frontal gyrus (up to 40.7%), and inferior parietal lobule (up to 78.1%). We found a functional specialization between emotional-motivational processes (clusters 1–5) and cognitive processes ...

This study explores the effects of manipulative content on uncertainty reduction, focusing on individual differences in Need for Cognition (NFC). Behavioral (reading cessation) and physiological (eye-tracking) measures were used to assess responses to cognitive, affective, and neutral stimuli. Results indicate that cognitive manipulations increase reading time; and cognitive and affective manipulations elicit more fixations and ...

Categorical learning plays a crucial role in cognitive development beginning in infancy. Adults typically employ selective attention during learning, focusing on key object features, while children utilize distributed attention, analyzing multiple features simultaneously. Reliance on selective attention leads to learning difficulties when established rules become ineffective and new ones must be identified - a task ...

Socioeconomic Status, Status-Based Identity Uncertainty, and Self-Concept Clarity in Iran: The Role of Independent and Interdependent Self-Construals
Khezri E., Tatarko A., Psychology. Journal of the Higher School of Economics 2025 Vol. 22 No. 1 P. 106–129
Previous research showed the association of socioeconomic status (SES) with both interdependence and independence in collectivistic cultures and the socioeconomic disadvantages of mismatch between the individual and the overarching culture. This study investigated whether interdependent-independent self-construals are linked to SES in Iran, if the culture-incongruent self is related to status-based identity uncertainty (SBIU), and if ...
