Experiments involving participant’s response recording by way of pressing buttons
are quite common. This simple method allows estimation of such crucial parameters as response
time and response correctness. However, more detailed analysis of behavioral responses
is needed in some cases. Crucial aspects within the cognitive control research field
include the conflict before decision-making, error detection after response commission and
internal uncertainty. The present research was carried out to validate and estimate the informativeness
of a new response recording method using mouse tracking. Erroneous responses
versus correct responses during performance of the auditory condensation task were analyzed
and then compared with the results of a previous similar experiment where buttons
were used for response recording. It was found that the time of starting mouse movements
corresponds to response times measured by way of participants pressing a button. In addition,
several parameters of mouse cursor trajectories were proposed as indirect measures
of participant’s certainty, including mouse movement time, track curvature (deviation from
a linear one), start angle and start velocity of mouse cursor, and finishing angle of response.
The obtained results allow us to conclude that the response recording method using the
mouse tracking technique provide highly informative behavioral data which can help to detect
internal uncertainty. Thus, the new method of response recording appears to be very
useful for cognitive control research.

Cognitive control includes maintenance of task-specific processes related to attention, and non-specific regulation of motor threshold. Depending upon the nature of the behavioral tasks, these mechanisms may predispose to different kinds of errors, with either increased or decreased response time of erroneous responses relative to correct responses. Specifically, slow responses are related to attentional lapses ...

Cognitive control includes maintenance of task-specific processes related to attention, and non-specific regulation of motor threshold. Generally, two different kinds of errors may occur, with some errors related to attentional lapses and decision uncertainty, and some errors – to failures of sustaining motor threshold. Error commission leads to adaptive adjustments in brain networks that subserve ...

Cognitive control is a set of processes that are responsible for flexible goal-directed behaviour. We did a series of electroencephalographic experiments during the auditory condensation task. The findings obtained allow distinguishing three brain networks that carry out adaptive processes after error commission. We also show that increased response time is associated with lower level of ...

Cognitive control includes specific maintenance of sustained attention to a stimulus
and non-specific regulation of a motor threshold. Failures in each system lead to different
types of errors, associated with attentional lapses and uncertainty or dysfunction of
the motor threshold. Subsequent adaptive adjustments can be implemented through two
different mechanisms, depending on the type of error. Two experiments were ...

Performance monitoring involves detection of action outcomes and initiation of appropriate behavioral adaptations. Psychophysiological mechanisms of performance monitoring remain largely understudied in the context of uncertainty that arises at the stage of stimulus identification and decision making, as well as in the context of inhibition/correction of the motor response. In the current study, we investigate ...

In tasks involving response choice based on certain stimulus-to-response mappings, at least two stages of information processing may be involved: (1) formation of sensory stimulus object representations leading to stimulus identification, and (2) application of stimulus-to-response mappings (i.e. “task rules”) to these representations leading to response selection. Most of the research done in this area ...

Outcome of a behavioral response can be detected either internally at the time of the response commission, or externally through a feedback signal. In both cases, a number of brain networks that subserve cognitive control are recruited, all networks having certain distinctive signatures in electroencephalographic oscillations. Yet most studies in the field have several limitations. ...

Current understanding of feature binding remains controversial. Studies involving mismatch negativity (MMN) measurement show a low level of binding, whereas behavioral experiments suggest a higher level. We examined the possibility that the two levels of feature binding coexist and may be shown within one experiment. The electroencephalogram was recorded while participants were engaged in an ...

Feature binding is believed to be critical for perception, while brain mechanisms of this process are still
under debate. Studies measuring mismatch negativity (MMN) demonstrate that binding occurs at a low level of the
cortical hierarchy, while behavioral experiments suggest a much higher integrative level. The current study aimed
at testing the hypothesis that processing of feature conjunctions ...

Cognitive control includes two basic aspects: maintenance of task-specific processes (including attention), and non-specific control of the motor threshold. In line with this distinction, performance errors may be explained by two alternative mechanisms: fast errors are believed to result from inappropriate action impulses that were allowed due to a failure in keeping the motor threshold ...

Purpose: Language comprehension in people with aphasia (PWA) is frequently evaluated using multiple-choice displays: PWA are asked to choose the image that best corresponds to the verbal stimulus in a display. When a nontarget image is selected, comprehension failure is assumed. However stimulus-driven factors unrelated to linguistic comprehension may influence performance. In this study we ...

Medial frontal cortex is currently viewed as the main hub of the performance monitoring system; upon detection of an error committed, it establishes functional connections with brain regions involved in task performance, thus leading to neural adjustments in them. Previous research has identified targets of such adjustments in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, posterior cortical regions, ...

Social influence on our behavior has been extensively studied in social psychology, but its neural mechanisms have remained largely unknown. Second, the subject’s actions are aimed at preventing the occurrence of critical fluctuations when the risk of control failure ...

One of the topics in current psycholinguistics research is studying the factors affecting syntactic choice in sentence production. Previous research suggests that syntactic choice results from an interplay between linguistic and non-linguistic factors, and a speaker’s attention to the elements of a described event represents one such factor. Observers are able to extract summary statistical properties, such as numerosity or the average, from spatially overlapping subsets of visuals objects. However, this ability is limited to about two subsets at a time, which may be primarily caused by the limited capacity of parallel representation of those subsets.
