When Pictures Hinder Understanding: Illustrations May Impede Learning of Abstract Ideas
Illustrations can help remember specific actions but do not always make abstract ideas easier to learn. Researchers from HSE University and Humboldt University compared how people learn from texts with different levels of abstractness. They found that participants remembered illustrations better and performed better on related tasks after reading a multimedia text about yoga asanas than after reading an abstract text about the Nash equilibrium. The findings could help improve the selection of illustrations for educational and informational materials. The study has been published in Learning and Instruction.

'I Wish That People Would Place Greater Trust in Science'
When Tatiana Eremicheva chose Fundamental and Computational Linguistics as her field of study, she thought it would be about learning languages. Instead, she discovered it was about helping people. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, she discusses science as a way of understanding the world, billiards as a team-building activity, and why learning to read is not always as easy as it seems.

Immunity to Chaos: How Personal Resources Help Us Cope with the Challenges of a Turbulent World
International conflicts, crises and digital overload—the modern world puts our minds to the test every day. Traditional psychology often focuses on the consequences: anxiety, depression, and psychosomatic disorders. But what if we looked at the problem differently—through the lens of the resources that prevent us from breaking down? Psychological immunity is precisely this set of resources. Alena Zolotareva and her group, Psychological Immunity as a Resource for Positive Functioning, are developing an integrative model of this phenomenon, adapting diagnostic tools and preparing for large-scale empirical research. Why do psychologists need to collaborate with medical professionals, and how could their research transform preventive care in clinics and corporations?

This study examines the contribution of focusing (enhancement of relevant information) and filtering (suppression of irrelevant information) mechanisms to categorical flexibility effects in adults with varying levels of ADHD symptom severity. Participants (N = 203, aged 18–59) performed a categorization learning task involving a switch of the relevant feature under two conditions: focusing and filtering. ...

This systematic review aims to synthesize and analyze current research on the characteristics of category learning in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) within the framework of the COVIS model, which posits competition between explicit (verbal) and implicit (nonverbal) categorization systems. The review includes 40 empirical studies published between 1981 and 2025, selected according to ...

Имплицитное научение в задаче зрительного поиска: роль пространственной и объектной рабочей памяти
Signayevskaya K., Gorbunova E. S.,

Н., Kotov A. A., Клиническая и специальная психология 2026 Т. 15 № 1 С. 51–63
Context and relevance. Category learning plays a key role in cognitive development from infancy. In the process of category learning, adults tend to use selective attention, focusing on the main features of objects, while children use distributed attention, analyzing multiple features simultaneously. The use of selective attention can lead to learning difficulties in new conditions, where ...

The effects of emotional distraction might differ depending on the valence and arousal of induced affective states. Nevertheless, insufficient complexity of a cognitive task might affect the ability of participants to allocate attention resources for the successful examination of emotional stimuli and task performance. This is why, in previous research, indicators of accuracy and response ...

Enhancing explainability in deepfake detection with graph attention networks
Aleksandr S. Pikul, Popov I., Безопасность информационных технологий 2025 Vol. 32 No. 2 P. 73–82
Understanding how artificial intelligence models make decisions is important, especially for difficult tasks like detecting deepfakes, where it's not enough to just get a result – it needs to know why the model made that choice. Many current methods, like Shapley additive explanations (SHAP) and Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping (Grad-CAM), help explain these decisions, but ...

This study is devoted to the investigation of neural correlates of attentional template formation in categorical search. The categorization process plays a crucial role in optimizing information processing and storage in working memory. Categories are divided into subordinate, basic and superordinate levels, which determine the degree of specificity and clarity of representation. Attentional templates contain ...

When learning new categories, different modes of attention distribution are involved: adults and children over the age of nine rely on selective attention, focusing on a limited number of relevant features, whereas younger children rely on distributed attention. Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) demonstrate distinct attention patterns. The study involved 39 participants: neurotypical children, ...

Когнитивные механизмы семантической адаптации заимствований в русском языке
Белов В. А., Belova V., Слово.ру: балтийский акцент 2025 Т. 16 № 1 С. 39–58
This paper investigates the semantic adaptation of new borrowings in Russian, addressing a gap in research on this topic. The relevance of the study stems from the ambiguous and often negative public perception of the increasing number of borrowings in the Russian language. The study aims to classify these borrowings and identify the under- lying ...
