The 'Second Shift' Is Not Why Women Avoid News
Women are more likely than men to avoid political and economic news, but the reasons for this behaviour are linked less to structural inequality or family-related stress than to personal attitudes and the emotional perception of news content. This conclusion was reached by HSE researchers after analysing data from a large-scale survey of more than 10,000 residents across 61 regions of Russia. The study findings have been published in Woman in Russian Society.

Uncertainty Reduction Through Affective and Cognitive Media Manipulations: An Eye-Tracking Pilot Study Across NFC Profile

P. 20–24.
Gorodnicheva Y., Bekim A., Klucharev V., Monahhova E., Mening S., Morozova A., Zinchenko O.

This study explores the effects of manipulative content on uncertainty reduction, focusing on individual differences in Need for Cognition (NFC). Behavioral (reading cessation) and physiological (eye-tracking) measures were used to assess responses to cognitive, affective, and neutral stimuli. Results indicate that cognitive manipulations increase reading time; and cognitive and affective manipulations elicit more fixations and saccades compared to neutral content. However, fixation duration, blink rate, and saccade velocity did not significantly differ across conditions. Correlations between NFC and eye-tracking metrics were not significant, suggesting that manipulative content impacts uncertainty reduction dynamics independently of NFC.

In this paper, we present new challenging data from Kazym Khanty (a Uralic language spoken in Western Siberia, Russia): in this articleless language, bare singular and bare dual NPs in argument positions can receive indefinite readings on par with definite ones, contradicting the predictions of the classic neo-Carlsonian approach (Chierchia, 1998; Dayal, 2004). We argue ...

Being Innovative or Being on the Safe Side - Managing the Risk of Failure
Meissner D., Salati Marcondes de Moraes G. H., Brandão Fischer B. et al., / NRU Higher School of Economics. Series WP BRP "Science, Technology and Innovation". 2025. No. WP BRP /STI/2025.
Innovation has long been at the center of debates in economics, management, and organizational studies. However, innovation is never free of uncertainty and risk. Every act of innovation implies a departure from established paths and a willingness to embrace the unknown. From the beginning it's never clear if there is an audience which appreciates the ...

Neural correlates of uncertainty processing: meta-analysis of fMRI studies
Andrey Timashkov, Sarah Anderson, Oksana Zinchenko, Frontiers in Neuroscience 2025 Vol. 19 Article 1662272
The analysis revealed nine distinct activation clusters, revealing a comprehensive neural network involved in uncertainty processing. Key findings demonstrated predominant activations in the anterior insula (up to 63.7% representation), inferior frontal gyrus (up to 40.7%), and inferior parietal lobule (up to 78.1%). We found a functional specialization between emotional-motivational processes (clusters 1–5) and cognitive processes ...

Trotsuk I., Социологическое обозрение 2025 Т. 24 № 3 С. 284–308

Adolescent agency and behavioral characteristics: conformity, problematic behavior, need for cognition
Mikhail Goshin, Grigoryev D., Pavel Sorokin, Frontiers in Psychology 2025 Vol. 16 Article 1410170
The concept of human agency has attracted considerable interest in academic and expert discussions concerning various life domains and age groups, including adolescents. However, the field lacks a unified approach to measuring agency for adolescents and understanding its relationship with their behavioral characteristics and attitudes. This  study addresses these gaps by introducing an Adolescent Agency Index and examining its associations with  behavioral ...

Socioeconomic Status, Status-Based Identity Uncertainty, and Self-Concept Clarity in Iran: The Role of Independent and Interdependent Self-Construals
Khezri E., Tatarko A., Psychology. Journal of the Higher School of Economics 2025 Vol. 22 No. 1 P. 106–129
Previous research showed the association of socioeconomic status (SES) with both interdependence and independence in collectivistic cultures and the socioeconomic disadvantages of mismatch between the individual and the overarching culture. This study investigated whether interdependent-independent self-construals are linked to SES in Iran, if the culture-incongruent self is related to status-based identity uncertainty (SBIU), and if ...

Abstract Detection of fatigue is extremely important in the development of different kinds of preventive systems (such as driver monitoring or operator monitoring for accident prevention). The presence of fatigue for this task should be determined with physiological and objective behavioral indicators. To develop an effective model of fatigue detection, it is important to record a ...

Instability of the boundaries between past, present and future has been hotly debated in historical theory since at least K. Popper's “The Poverty of Historicism”. A new twist in this debate is linked to R. Koselleck's concepts of the "horizon of expectations" and F. Hartog's presentism, as well as to the debate about trauma and ...

Impact of audio and video narratives describing financial successes and failures on risk-taking in the Balloon Analogue Risk Task
Rakhmankulova Z., Efimov K., Kadieva D. et al., Cognition, Brain, Behavior. An Interdisciplinary Journal 2024 Vol. 28 No. 2 P. 137–182
Narratives can influence risk-taking by shaping perceptions and emotions. In the present study we used first-person audio and video narratives describing either financial successes, failures, or neutral events devoid of any risk references in order to investigate how these types of stimuli affect risk-taking performance in the Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART). Audio narratives of ...

Robustness of Graphical Lasso Optimization Algorithm for Learning a Graphical Model
Valeriy Kalyagin, Ilya Kostylev, , in: Mathematical Optimization Theory and Operations Research. 23rd International Conference, MOTOR 2024, Omsk, Russia, June 30–July 6, 2024, Proceedings. LNCS, volume 14766.: Springer, 2024. P. 337–348.
Problem of learning a graphical model (graphical model selection problem) consists of recovering a conditional dependence structure (concentration graph) from data given as a sample of observations from a random vector. Various algorithms to solve this problem are known. One class of algorithms is related with convex optimization problem with additional lasso regularization term. Such ...
