«Дар богов» в диалоге Платона «Филеб». «Грамматика» Тевта
Вестник Московского университета. Серия 7: Философия. 2017. № 2. С. 21-42.

One of the examples of the dialectical method in the ‘Philebus’ (‘Gift of the Gods’) is Theuth's invention of the alphabet and art of grammar. We consider this example in the context of our interpretation of Plato’s later dialectic as mainly a method of anamnesis, consisting of three parts: synagōgē, implying our ability to perceive some unity in the multitude; diairesis, implying the ability to perceive each unity in the multitude apart of each other; and symplokē, which is an art to combine such unities. Some interesting features of Plato’s view of the alphabet are also discussed.

We examine the parallels between the theory of pleasure ascribed by Plato to the ‘enemies of Philebus’, in the homonymous dialogue, and that of the ‘wise men’, in the Republic 9. Though some of these parallels were noticed by G. Grote in 1865 and by J. Adam in 1907, their observations did not receive further ...

The paper deals with the political sense of the dialectical method of Plato. Dialectics is often understood as a pure logical procedure. However the two forms of the dialectical discourse (mentioned in the “Phaedrus”) must be interpreted politically: the first one is a movement of freedom, the second one is a movement of justice. The ...

In the second half of the XX century Socrates’ argument in the Philebus 36b–40a came to be considered as anticipating the modern definition of pleasure as a “propositional attitude”. On this reading, Protarchus’ position is close either to that of Descartes, who thought that we enjoy infallibility in regard to passions, or to that of ...

This paper considers the possibility of quantitative measurement of Plato’s style using Burrows’ Delta. The author concludes that the result is not very informative if a limited number of author’s profiles, each corresponding to the known or assumed fluctuations in the author’s style, is used for machine classification. Instead, minimal Delta distances calculated for the ...

The so called “Gift of the Gods” in Plato’s “Philebus” [15a-19a] remains to be one of the most enigmatic, perplexing and interesting texts in the ‘later’ dialogues. It was often considered as being largely influenced by Pythagoreans or even as a direct adoption of some Pythagorean way of inquiry. However, what might seem to be ...

According to the widely spread opinion among historians of philosophy, Plato makes a philosophical conceptualization of word αἰών, using it in the sense of “eternity” and implying infinity and timelessness. However, a careful analysis of Plato’s cosmological ideas in the context of early usage of αἰών gives a basis for rejection of this traditional point ...

The irony of Socrates is one of the essential elements of Plato’s dialogues. However, what appears ironic or playful to modern readers, was not apprehended in the same way by Neoplatonic commentators. For Proclus, one of problematic Plato’s passages concerns the “laborious game,” which refers to the refined eight hypotheses of the Parmenides. Proclus turns to various places of ...
