Immunity to Chaos: How Personal Resources Help Us Cope with the Challenges of a Turbulent World
International conflicts, crises and digital overload—the modern world puts our minds to the test every day. Traditional psychology often focuses on the consequences: anxiety, depression, and psychosomatic disorders. But what if we looked at the problem differently—through the lens of the resources that prevent us from breaking down? Psychological immunity is precisely this set of resources. Alena Zolotareva and her group, Psychological Immunity as a Resource for Positive Functioning, are developing an integrative model of this phenomenon, adapting diagnostic tools and preparing for large-scale empirical research. Why do psychologists need to collaborate with medical professionals, and how could their research transform preventive care in clinics and corporations?

‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

Frege and Propositional Unity

British Journal for the History of Philosophy. 2017. Vol. 25. No. 4. P. 750–771.
Bronzo S.

This paper identifies a tension in Frege’s philosophy and offers a diagnosis of its origins.Frege’s Context Principle can be used to dissolve the problem of propositional unity. However, Frege’s official response to the problem does not invoke the Context Principle, but the distinction between “saturated” and “unsaturated” propositional constituents. I argue that such a response involves assumptions that clash with the Context Principle. I suggest, however, that this tension is not generated by deep-seated philosophical commitments, but by Frege’s occasional attempt to take a dubious shortcut in the justification of his conception of propositional structure.

Clarity of knowledge and reasoning is necessary in many cases. Yet vagueness in scientific thinking related to surprise, curiosity, "ability to engage with not-knowing" (de Freitas) and abductive reasoning is also a crucially important source of scientific creativity which supplements combinatorial logic when dealing with the already known. Starting from studies by C. S. Peirce ...

Twardowskian Semantics for Performative Utterances
M. A. Smirnov, Логико-философские штудии 2024 Vol. 21 No. 4 P. 195–197
Works of Twardowski in the early XX century contain an outline of general semantic framework for natural languages. This framework, proposed within Twardowski’s theory of actions and ‘products’, provides a drastic alternative to Frege’s semantic framework based on the notion of proposition (Gedanke in Frege). The latter has to a great extent shaped the following development ...

Notions of validity and efficacy of law have long been in the spotlight of jurisprudence, but the discussion on the respective issues is of a circular nature. We propose to systematize the existing approaches to legal validity on the basis of two criteria: 1) foundation of validity and 2) relation between validity and efficacy. This ...

Propositional Complexity and the Frege-Geach Point
Bronzo S., Synthese 2021 Vol. 198 P. 3099–3130
It is almost universally accepted that the Frege-Geach Point is necessary for explaining the inferential relations and compositional structure of truth-functionally complex propositions. I argue that this claim rests on a disputable view of propositional structure, which models truth-functionally complex propositions on atomic propositions. I propose an alternative view of propositional structure, based on a ...

Assertive graphs
Bellucci F., Chiffi D., Pietarinen A., Journal of Applied Non-Classical Logics 2018 Vol. 28 No. 1 P. 72–91
Peirce and Frege both distinguished between the propositio nal content of an assertion and the assertion of a propositional content, but with different notational means. We present a modification of Peirce’s graphical method of logic that can b e used to reason about assertions in a manner similar to Peirce’s original method. We propose a new system of Assertive Graphs (AGs), which unlike ...

Frege on Multiple Analyses and the Essential Articulatedness of Thought
Bronzo S., Journal for the History of Analytic Philosophy 2017 Vol. 5 No. 10 P. 1–34
Frege appears to hold both (a) that thoughts are internally articulated, in a way that mirrors the semantic articulation of the sentences that express them, and (b) that the same thought can be analyzed in different ways, none of which has to be more fundamental than the others. Commentators have often taken these theses to ...

Rispondere delle proprie parole. Temi cavelliani nel «Tractatus»
Bronzo S., Iride. Journal of Philosophy and Public Debate 2011 Vol. XXIV No. 3 P. 615–630
This paper argues that the conception of language articulated in Wittgenstein's Tractatus can be helpfully interpreted in light of two important themes in the philosophy of Stanley Cavell: 1) The idea that language requires our own personal contribution, and 2) the idea that the impulse to elaborate philosophical theories, whether skeptical or foundationalist, is partially motivated ...

Atomism, Contextualism, and the Burden of Making Sense: Cavellian Themes in the Tractatus
Bronzo S., Wittgenstein-Studien, German 2013 Vol. 4 No. 1 P. 95–108
The main claim of this paper is one that many readers will find surprising, namely that some central aspects of the Tractatus’ conception of language can be illuminated with the help of the philosophy of Stanley Cavell. One reason such a claim will seem surprising is that the Tractatus as standardly read is advancing an ...

Context, Compositionally, and Nonsense in Wittgenstein's Tractatus
Bronzo S., , in: Beyond the Tractatus Wars: The New Wittgenstein Debate.: Routledge, 2011. Ch. 4 P. 84–111.
This chapter aims to show that the Tractatus can be coherently committed, at one and the same time, to a strong version of the context principle (sufficiently strong to entail the austere conception of nonsense) and to a version of the principle of compositionality. It is quite natural to interpret these two semantic principles in ...
