This paper argues that the conception of language articulated in Wittgenstein's Tractatus can be helpfully interpreted in light of two important themes in the philosophy of Stanley Cavell: 1) The idea that language requires our own personal contribution, and 2) the idea that the impulse to elaborate philosophical theories, whether skeptical or foundationalist, is partially motivated by the desire to evade this responsibility. The paper also lays out a sense in which, for both Wittgenstein and Cavell, language is permeated by an ethical dimension.
