Ветер перемен: система глаголов поля ‘менять’ в русском языке в синхронии и (микро) диахронии
The paper describes the system of verbs of change in the Russian language against a typological background within the frame approach to lexical typology. In Russian, this system can be qualified as dominant: the imperfective verb menyat(sya)
and its prefixed perfective derivative menyat(sya) cover most of the frames in the field. At the same time, in Russian, this system shows parallels with distributive systems, where different frames are covered by dedicated lexical means due to the presence of an inventory of prefixal derivatives of the root -men-. These are associated with various frames of the field and their combinations and express certain additional oppositions within the frames. The paper proposes a detailed discussion of all the verbs with the root -men- that belong to the field of change, as well as of other lexical and morphosyntactic means used in the semantic domain; cf. the verbs prevraščat, preobrazovyvat, modifitsirovat, etc., as well as the word-formation pattern with the prefix pere- (cf. pereinačivat, peredelyvat, peresmatrivat, etc.).
Special attention is paid to micro-diachronic processes involving the expanding combinability of the verb pomenyat(sya) and the parallel narrowing distribution of the previously dominant verb peremenit(sya).
The paper shows that both the present-day distribution of the prefixal derivatives and the diachronic changes conform to the existing typological views on the frame structure of the field: at any given time, each verb covers a contiguous area on the semantic map. Furthermore, different frames are associated with different meanings of the postfix -sya and with different patterns for perfective and imperfective forms’ formation.
