Works within a Codex: The structure of Bruno's 'magical' writings
From the very start the classification of the texts contained in the Codex Norov as separate works by Bruno and the assignment of titles to these has been arbitrary and jortuitous. This holds in particular for De magia and Theses de magia, where the numbered paragraphs of the latter referred to particular sections of the jormer. This was not noticed by the editors, although the respective 'thesis' numbers are indicated on the margins of De magia both in the Moscow and the Erlangen mss. This precise relationship is further confirmed by the marginalia of the Moscow ms., which reveal auctorial cross-references and apparently exclude any hypothesis of a chronological succession of the two books. These texts should probably be seen as parts of one book composed according to the mnemotechnic principles of the unfinished De vinculis and many of Bruno's 'Lullian' books.
