The article analyzes the work of the poet of the XVIII century. Nguyen Tong Quai. Attention is drawn to the fact that in Vietnam, only after the proclamation of the policy of renewal, they began to actively study and appreciate his literary legacy, although even during the poet's lifetime, his contemporaries gave extremely positive reviews of his poems. The article reveals the reasons why for a long time Nguyen Tong Quai was in the shadow of more famous poets. The poetic traditions followed by Nguyen Tong Quai are noted. The author considers the merits of the poet, which contributed to the development of Vietnamese literature during his lifetime and in subsequent times. His contribution to the establishment of the national spirit in Vietnamese literature is appreciated through works written in Vietnamese using the traditional Vietnamese poetic form of lukbat. Translations of the so-called "embassy poems" and poems on the historical theme of Nguyen Tong Quai are given.
