Имперские дипломаты на севере Европы в середине XIX века: практики наблюдения и языки описания

This article examines the diplomatic practices of the Russian Empire in northern Europe during the mid-nineteenth century, with particular focus on the methods of observation and interpretation of political events as reflected in official dispatches. The focus is on the limitations of observation practices and how visual metaphors, comparisons and the stylistic features of diplomatic correspondence shaped the image of ‘objective’ knowledge of current events. Based on an analysis of French-language dispatches from Copenhagen and Stockholm from the 1840s to the 1860s, as well as personal sources relating to individual diplomats–including those not previously introduced into academic discourse–the study examines how imperial representatives gathered information on political transformations in Denmark and Sweden- Norway, interpreting them through the prism of the Vienna System of Security
