For the first time involved in the broad scientific archival documents allow to see the period of the «cold war» with unexpected angle - the inclusion of the interests of the two superpowers of individual countries and whole regions through the establishment and development of tourist relations. The article considers the initial period of activity of «Intourist» for the development of outbound tourism in the USSR. Analysis of materials of office (official documents, materials of meetings, reports and memos to staff accompanying tourist groups abroad) gives the opportunity to reconstruct not only the geography, the volumes of foreign tourism and its specific features, but the criteria of selection of candidates for overseas travel, and to assess the culture shock experienced by the Soviet tourists from a collision with a foreign reality.
