‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

Scientists Train Neural Network to Generate Process Plans from 3D Models
Researchers at the HSE FCS AI and Digital Science Institute have developed CAD2TechSpec, a framework that converts 3D models of mechanical parts into machining process plans—step-by-step instructions for machine tools. The solution aims to reduce the time required for the design and preparation of technical process documentation in mechanical engineering, aircraft manufacturing, and other high-tech industries. The study findings have been published in PeerJ Computer Science.

Ситуация языкового сдвига усугубилась в последние десятилетия, многие идиомы современного Ирана, несмотря на усилия академического сообщества и проекты по составлению диалектологических атласов, ещё не задокументированы и могут исчезнуть уже в скором будущем. Эта перспектива ближайших 50 лет обусловлена, во-первых, сильным повышением среднего возраста носителей отдельно взятых идиомов и, во-вторых, переходом молодежи — из-за ряда политических, ...

Nominative Object
Ronko R., Wiemer B., , in: Encyclopedia of Slavic Languages and Linguistics Online.: Brill, 2020.
The nominative object describes a clause type in which the object of a transitive verb takes nominative morphology, and this coding is not conditioned by voice operations. It is a salient property in regions in which Slavic varieties have been in contact with Finnic- and/or Baltic-speaking population, i.e., in the eastern part of the Circum-Baltic ...

О принципах глагольной колексификации
Rakhilina E. V., Ryzhova D., Вопросы языкознания 2025 № 2 С. 7–25
The paper is devoted to the basic principles of verbal colexification defined at the cross-linguistic level. We understand colexification as a non-random association of two or more meanings within one and the same lexical item. We argue that these associations, reproducing in different languages, should follow certain principles and form clear patterns. Drawing on our extensive experience of ...

Kseniia K. Kashleva, Krasnoshchekova S., Вестник Новосибирского государственного университета. Серия: Лингвистика и межкультурная коммуникация 2025 Vol. 23 No. 2 P. 130–144
This article investigates direct object acquisition by adult learners of Russian as a second language (L2). Students of different proficiency levels (A1-C1) took part in the experimental study and their data was compared with that produced by the L1 speakers. It found that verb valency, as well as learner profi ciency levels, significantly impact this process. ...

Агентивность японских результативных конструкций: скрытый деятель и семантика состояния
Strizhak U., Урало-алтайские исследования 2024 № 3(54) С. 84–107
This article deals with Japanese resultatives in terms of the degree of prototypical agentive characteristics expressed by their participants. The research material was Japanese lexical verb pairs with regular semantic correspondence, in which an intransitive verb is opposed by a transitive verb. Such semantic pairing makes it possible to compare aspectual verb constructions with different ...

Бадеев А. О., Вопросы языкового родства 2024 № 1-2 (22) С. 75–105
In this paper I discuss the use of demonstratives in Old Iranian languages. On the basis of the deictic semantics of demonstratives, the boundaries of suppletive paradigms are defined. For the first time, the correspondence of each paradigm to a particular type of deixis is established on Old Iranian data. Using this data, as well ...

Рефлексы древнеиранских превербов в шугнанском языке
Armand E., Вопросы языкового родства 2024 Т. 22 № 1-2 С. 43–74
In this paper, I present a descriptive and diachronic analysis of a set of Shughni verbs which include preverbs of Common Iranian origin (a-, an-/im-/am-, bar-, bi-/be-/b-, nax̌-/naɣ̌-/nix̌-, ni-/na-). The main objective of the study is to determine the quantity, grammatical status, and semantic features of these preverbs in the modern Shughni verb system, and ...

Дифференцированное объектное маркирование в шугнанском языке
Чистякова Д. Г., Типология морфосинтаксических параметров 2022 Т. 5 № 2 С. 84–100
Many Iranian languages have developed differential object marking (DOM). Since many languages have lost case inflection, special markers were used to mark a direct object. In different Iranian languages, DOM may depend on different factors: specificity hierarchy; tense and aspect or information structure [Windfuhr 2009: 33; Bossong 1985]. In Shughni special marking of an object ...

Семантическое поле ‘менять’ в финском языке
Лапшина К. М., Копылова Е. В., Матюхина Е. П., Урало-алтайские исследования 2024 № 1(52) С. 22–41
This paper focuses on the main verbs of change in Finnish — muuttaa, vaihtaa and korvata and their frequentative derivatives. The verbs are analysed within the frame-based approach to lexical typology, which suggests that a semantic field can be divided into several situation types, or frames. Lexemes map differently onto the frames in the world’s ...

Letuchiy A., Русская речь 2021 № 2 С. 20–34
The article focuses on non-standard constructions with Russian refl exive verbs like myt’sja ‘wash (oneself)’, brit’sja ‘shave (oneself)’, pričesyvat’sja ‘comb (oneself)’, and so on. The particularity of these constructions is that in colloquial and internet speech, they are sometimes used in constructions incompatible with internet in literary speech. While modifi ers like ves’ are non-standard, ...

Русское местоимение ТАМ как средство анафоры к актанту
Letuchiy A., Вопросы языкознания 2021 Т. 2021 № 4 С. 72–90
The present article addresses a special use of the Russian locative pronoun tam: the use represented in examples like ‘I talked to her — no understanding of the situation there’. In those contexts, tam refers to a participant (usually animate), rather than a location. After a brief sketch of other uses, I describe the rules and restrictions on the ...

Typology and diachrony of converbs in Indo-Aryan
Stroński K., Kulikov L., Diachronica 2021 Vol. 38 No. 3 P. 457–501
Non-finite forms constitute an important component of the verbal system of Indo-Aryan (IA) languages. On the one hand, some of them, such as e.g., converbs, have already received proper attention in historical linguistics and typological literature, with regard to Old Indo-Aryan (OIA), Middle Indo-Aryan (MIA) and New Indo-Aryan (NIA) (cf. Tikkanen 1987; Peterson 1998; Subbarao 2012 among others). Other ...

Когнитивный подход к обучению предполагает учет в процессе обучения японскому языку когнитивных оснований для выбора того или иного предикативного ядра в рамках японских синтаксических конструкций, а также развитие и совершенствование у студентов навыка анализа культурного фона соответствующих языковых конструкций. В работе будут представлены результаты статистического анализа лингвистических данных (предикативных ядер японских предложений), а также описан ...

Russian constructions with numerals and quantifiers: Their non-standard use in the subject and object position
Letuchiy A., RHEMA 2020 No. 1 P. 70–89
In  the  article, I  describe cases of  special behavior of  Russian phrases with quantifiers like neskol’ko ‘some’, mnogo ‘many, much’ and small numerals like dva ‘two’. I  show that they can occur in the  subject position in  contexts that usually do not contain a canonical DP/NP subject (constructions with the verb xvatat’ ‘be enough’, negation contexts with ...

Артикли в рутульском языке
Nasledskova P., Типология морфосинтаксических параметров 2019 Т. 2 № 2 С. 79–94
Numeral ‘one’ and demonstratives are usual sources of grammaticalization of articles in the languages of the world. Rutul numeral sa ‘one’ and demonstratives are widely used in texts in functions close to those of articles. Rutul data show that even though it is questionable whether sa can be considered an article, it can be considered ...

Resolving conflicting cues in processing of ambiguous words: The role of case, word order, and animacy
Edeleva J., Chrabaszcz A., Demareva V., The Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology 2020 Vol. 73 No. 8 P. 1173–1188
We report results from a self-paced silent reading study and a self-paced reading-aloud study examining ambiguous forms (heteronyms) of Russian animate and inanimate nouns which are differentiated in speech through word stress, e.g. uCHItelja.TEACHER.GEN/ACC.SG and uchiteLJA.TEACHERS.NOM.PL1. During reading, the absence of the auditory cue (word stress) to word identification results in morphologically ambiguous forms since ...
