In this paper I discuss Jean-Luc Marion’s “reduction to givenness”. Comparing Marion’s approach to gift with that of Derrida, I show that this enlargement of the area of phenomenology goes in line with the main trends of the contemporary French phenomenology. Furthermore, I demonstrate that Marion views the role of the philosophizing subject in quite a traditional way – as the sovereign holder of absolute truth.
