The article considers the constitutional status of a subject of the federation as a legal category and conducts a comparative analysis of the status characteristics of two «families» of subjects of the Russian Federation, formed according to the national and territorial principle of formation, as well as six groups of subjects within these «families». Arguments are given in favor of overcoming the asymmetry of the subject composition by reducing to a common denominator the constitutional and legal powers of subjects within the corresponding group. Attempts to simplify the federal structure using the process of merging autonomous regions with «parent» subjects are critically evaluated.
