The article considers the basic methods of investigation of asymmetry of Russian federalism from a constitutional and legal point of view. The author analyzes the use of formalization, comparative legal method, specifically-historical method, expert evaluation method, SWOT analysis, idealization method and the legal modelling method in the study of the legal status of the Russian Federation subjects, development of the author’s classification Russian’s subjects and preparation of a draft of federal constitutional law on the procedure of changing of the legal status of the subject of the Federation.
