Абазинские и адыгейские демонстративы: моноцентричность под видом полицентричности

The paper examines demonstrative systems in Ashqarawa Abaza and Temirgoy West Circassian. The study is based on an experiment using the questionnaire [Wilkins 2018], which identifies parameters affecting the choice of demonstratives. Despite certain differences, both systems are similar in that they show the relevance of distance from the speaker, association with the addressee, and visibility. However no demonstrative is used consistently when the referent is near the addressee, since distance from the speaker is also significant. We argue that these systems are not polycentric but rather speaker-oriented, where association with the addressee prevents inclusion in the speaker's domain.
