The article deals with the process of transformation of museum exhibitions in the first dec- ades of Soviet power. It also examines the public display formula created by the Soviet museum in the 1920s. The exposition of the USSR’s Museum of the Revolution is given as an example. In the 1930s the approaches of the museum became typical for other museums. During the first years of work of the museum exhibition contained a lot of textual materials. Therefore, the museum sought to replenish the collection with items related to the history of the revolutionary movement. Despite this work, the exhibition still looked like a spatially expanded textbook. Moreover, the scientific value of the collection was relegated to the background. The article is written based on archive materials of the State Central Museum of Contemporary History of Russia (formerly the USSR’s Museum of the Revolution), the State Historical Museum (Department of Written Sources of the State Historical Museum), published works about history of museum’s construction in the USSR.
