Teaching in Virtual and Hybrid Classrooms
Virtual and hybrid classrooms are a reality in today’s educational world. At times, they might have seemed like insurmountable challenges, such as for teaching English as a foreign language (EFL). Yet, they offer opportunities to educators who, by keeping abreast of technological advances, can access new ways of teaching. In this chapter, we examine differences between virtual and hybrid classrooms as well as traditional offline classrooms. We discuss possible issues that might arise when delivering classes in fully online venues, where all students participate virtually, and in hybrid venues, where some students participate virtually and others face-to-face. We also propose potential solutions, describe practical applications, and identify an array of digital tools, including apps and websites. By learning about virtual and hybrid classrooms, you will be able to plan, implement, and adapt best practices for meeting student needs based on their language levels and digital access.
