At HSE University–St Petersburg, Experts Discuss How AI Changes Tourist Routes and Cultural Heritage
Neural networks are no longer simple travel assistants; now they decide what to include on the route and what to skip. Artificial intelligence changes how people perceive a place and shapes the image of tourist centres. At the II International Scientific and Practical Conference ’Information Technologies in the Preservation and Promotion of Cultural Heritage,’ researchers discussed who controls algorithmic solutions and in what ways, and whether authentic traditions get lost in them.

2025. № 4 (123). С. 276–295.
Andronova E., Kapuza A.

This study examines methods for assessing the levels of abstraction of scientific concepts, which, unlike everyday concepts, often lack explicit representation in daily experience. The aim is to systematise approaches to their classification by abstraction level and develop a method based on concept maps and dictionary definitions. Using a sample of seven experts in statistical data analysis (106 concepts, 71 unique), classification was conducted according to Rosch’s taxonomy using two approaches. The results show that concept maps reveal concept hierarchies, but accuracy depends on map quality, while classification from definitions is more standardised yet limited by lack of context. The identified limitations highlight the need for structured tools for analysing scientific concepts.

Algebraic Model of Reflexive Problematic Statements
V. A. Petrovsky, Scientific and Technical Information Processing 2022 Vol. 49 No. 6 P. 472 – 480
This paper focuses on reflexive problematic statements represented by modal judgments of validity (subjective truth) and their combinations. It is proposed to describe these statements at three levels: reflexive problematic statements per se, modal judgments that characterize the validity of sentences constituting complex statements, and matrix representations of modal judgments. Modal judgments, as part of ...

The paper substantiates the concept of the existence of a “transvital Self”, a particular form of an individual’s existence beyond the apparent forms of vital function and the processes of reproducing self as a psychophysical integrity. The author uses the term “transvitality” (as in A. Akopyan’s “transvital meanings”) to more generally address this concept as ...

The concept of the I that is present in the scholarly and mundane consciousness is inwardly paradoxical, as it contains the risk of regression to “bad infinity”. Thus, “I see an object” obviously creates in me the image of the object; by implication, “someone” inside me sees the image of the perceived object and, consequently, ...

Losing time for oneself? Tutoring, organised activities, and self-directed leisure as predictors of psychological well-being and academic achievement in Russian adolescents
Ivanov I., Ostapenko E., World Leisure Journal 2026 P. 1–21
Adolescents’ leisure is increasingly compressed by tutoring and organized classes, raising concerns about time for self-directed recovery and agency. This study examines how structured and unstructured time relate to psychological well-being and academic achievement, and whether well-being helps explain time-achievement links. Using a 2024 school-based survey of 2,944 Russian students in grades 5–8, we measured ...

The term “broad autism phenotype” (BAP) refers to individuals who do not meet the diagnostic criteria for autism but share some of its features, including social difficulties and atypicalities in visual perception and attention that have been linked to a detail-oriented cognitive style. To examine both the cognitive and social aspects of BAP, we employed ...

Generative AI and the balance of effort in group tasks: Appropriate, over-, and under-scaffolding
Korchak A., Hughes C., Costley J., Journal of Research on Technology in Education 2026 P. 1–17
Generative artificial intelligence (Gen-AI) is increasingly used in higher education, yet its role in collaborative learning remains unclear. This study examines how students use Gen-AI during group lesson-planning tasks in an undergraduate education course. Drawing on Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory, we introduce the concept of “an effort space” and apply the categories of appropriate, over-, and ...

Andronova E., Kapuza A.,
This study examines concepts as systemic elements within a conceptual structure, drawing on the theoretical framework of L.S. Vygotsky’s cultural-historical psychology. A key characteristic of concepts is their level of abstraction, which reflects their degree of generalization within a system. However, existing classification methods lack a unified approach, complicating empirical research. The current study aimed ...

Rethinking pre-training: cognitive load implications for learners with varying prior knowledge
Gorbunova A., Kapuza A., Chen O. et al., Frontiers in Psychology 2025 Vol. 16 Article 1628047
This study examines how prior knowledge and pre-training relate to cognitive load during problem-solving. Grounded in cognitive load theory, it investigates whether pre-training facilitates learning by reducing cognitive load or imposes redundant information for learners with higher prior knowledge. In an experiment with 136 university students, pre-training was implemented through concept maps and a glossary ...

How adding structure reduces complexity: more interconnections in concept maps do not increase cognitive load
Costley J., Anastasiia Kapuza, Gorbunova A. et al., Instructional Science 2025 Vol. 53 P. 1243–1262
Cognitive load theory describes the mechanisms for the transfer of information from human working memory to long-term memory. This theory posits that increasing the number of interactive elements, such as interconnections, may increase cognitive load. This study investigates the impact of interconnections in concept maps on cognitive load, exploring whether they act as interactive elements ...

This study examines how conceptual maps can be used in secondary school history, geography, and social studies courses to empirically test the thresholds of concepts. This helps to connect different subjects in the learning process. The results show that the integrative characteristics of threshold concepts help in the formation of a system that, as a ...

Kapuza A., Tyumeneva Y. A., Мир психологии.
One way to represent the structure of students' concepts is through the method of concept maps. Their analysis is effectively carried out using network theories, but for meaningful psychological interpretation the possibilities of mathematics are expectedly limited. At the same time, psychological theories of conceptual development provide meaningful directions for the mathematical analysis of concept ...

The network approach to assess the structure of knowledge: Storage, distribution and retrieval as three measures in analysing concept maps
Kapuza A., Koponen I., Tyumeneva Y. A., British Journal of Educational Technology 2020 Vol. 51 No. 6 P. 2573–2590
We present three new standardised network concept map (CM) measures that can provide unique information about learning‐related progress, which cannot be determined from previously known measures. Grounded in cognitive development theory on the one hand, and network theory on the other hand, our measures reveal how knowledge is stored, distributed and retrieved. We validated the ...

How Concept Maps with and without a List of Concepts Differ: The Case of Statistics
Kapuza A., Education Sciences 2020 Vol. 91 No. 10(4) P. 1–13
Concept mapping is a popular tool for knowledge structure assessment. In recent years, both the amount of research about concept maps and their measurement ability have grown. It has been shown that concept maps with different types of tasks, for instance, links between concepts given or selected by a respondent, provide information about the different ...
