In Russian historiography, a one-sided view of Gennadius Scholarius as an opponent of the union and an «anti-Westerner» is widely presented. Such an «anti-Western» line of reading the history of theology can be traced in Russian historiography of the 20th century, especially after the rediscovery of the legacy of Gregory Palamas and its ideologization as an ideal of the anti-Western, anti-rationalistic peak of the Eastern Byzantine theological tradition. The objective of this review article is to demonstrate the other side of the work and personality of Scholarius to clearly demonstrate that the anti-Uniate position in the field of theology does not deny the fact of deep respect for Thomas Aquinas and, more broadly, for the Latin philosophical tradition. To this end, the article offers a general overview of Scholarius's Thomism and Aristotelianism, as well as an examination of the motivation for his appeal to these intellectual traditions, which is not limited to political reasons.
