Граница между религиозными и нерелигиозными медиа: опыт Русской Православной Церкви в российском медиапространстве
This article challenges the traditional boundary between secular and religious media through the lens of S. Hjarvard’s framework for analyzing the mediatization of religion. In the context of trends such as convergence and deep mediatization, many boundaries become ineffective, leading to a blurring of even the most intuitive categories. When employed in research, these blurred distinctions can distort our understanding of the field’s current state. Using the Russian Orthodox Church’s mediatization in Russian media as a case study, the article illustrates the mutual infiltration and influence of secular and religious media, both in terms of publication content and platform usage, and in some instances, at both levels simultaneously. The authors provide a detailed examination of various media platforms, highlighting instances where boundaries between the secular and religious are strictly maintained alongside examples of their profound interconnection. The similarity of the content of publications is demonstrated based on the results of frame analysis of publications on those platforms that can clearly be perceived as secular or religious. The relevance of this study is underscored by the limited understanding of the mediatization of the Russian Orthodox Church compared to other Abrahamic religions and Christian denominations, as well as the need for critical reflection on the analytical tools applied to the process of mediatization in the realm of religion.
