Загадка Фавна (Calp. Ecl. 1.87–88): текст и интерпретация

The paper examines the interpretive and textual problems connected with the enigmatic prophecy of Faunus in Calp. Ecl. 1.87–88 and the solutions proposed so far. It is suggested that an emendation is necessary in line 87, the most plausible of those proposed being that of H. Diels (patrios instead of prius ex/a). In line 88 a new interpretation is proposed (‘…except when a new-born person will (immediately) face death’) connecting the line with Hes. OD 180–181 and requiring only a slight correction of the transmitted text (G. Kempher’s occasum instead of occasus, the change of either occasus or ortus to accusative singular being virtually inevitable in the line).
