Visual search for multiple targets is especially error prone. One of these errors is called subsequent search misses (SSM) and represents a decrease in accuracy at detecting a second target after a first target has been found. One of the possible explanations of SSM errors is working memory resource depletion. Four experiments investigated the role of different kinds of working memory in SSM errors. The first experiment investigated the role of object working memory using a classical color change detection task. In the second and the third experiments, a modified change detection task was applied, using shape as the relevant feature. In the fourth experiment, a spatial working memory task was used to reveal the role of spatial working memory in SSM. The second and the third experiments revealed interference between working memory and visual search tasks, whereas in the first and the fourth experiments interference was not found. The results are discussed in terms of specific working memory deficit in SSM errors.

Guided search is a mechanism that controls and optimizes the deployment of attention during visual search and allows one to pay attention only to highly relevant items. For instance, when searching for a conjunction of two features, we are able to select a feature-marked subset (e.g., all items sharing same color) prior to focusing attention on particular items. Standard models assume that only separate features can guide attention since they are only available at the preattentive stage of visual analysis and no conjunction information is available at that stage. Here I show that search performance is affected by both the distribution of features across the visual field and their conjunctions in particular items. It appears that people are unable to use “pure”, unbound features for selecting relevant subsets. This major finding requires reconsidering the standard models of guided search. The concept of distributed attention, which represents multiple items as imperfectly bound objects, seems promising in explaining this finding.

Event-related Potentials as Correlates of Attentional Resource Allocation in Dependence on Individual Differences
Chernyshev B. V., Lazarev I. E., Chernysheva E. G. et al. Psychology. PSY. Высшая школа экономики, 2012. No. 01.
The nature of interrelations of brain event-related potentials to behavioral measures and temperament dimensions was studied in the situation of attention under the auditory oddball paradigm. Several components of event-related potentials were found to be related to Extraversion, Mobility, Ergonicity and Emotionality. The results are discussed within the framework of the resource model of attention. New putative internal dimensions of temperament are suggested. The data obtained lay the foundation for further psychophysiological studies of attention in the context of individual differences.
