The interview with Prof. N.E. Pokrovsky of the National Research University Higher School of Economics discusses his path to the science of rural-urban development. Based on his own experience as a city dweller, Pokrovsky reflects on how and why city dwellers come to the village with their own projects and plans for living and organizing the surrounding reality. The interviews examine the life trajectories of different social strata of city dwellers in their rural search. At the same time, essential characteristics of the dynamics of rural change in recent decades are given, including on the basis of Pokrovsky's personal experience with the long-term work of the Ugor Rural Development Project in the Kostroma region. As an American sociologist, in his reflections Pokrovsky also refers to the American roots of the rural way of life associated with the ideas of T. Jefferson and H.D. Thoreau, as well as his personal impressions of working and living in rural areas of the United States.
Much attention in the interviews is paid to the issues of spatial rethinking of rural-urban development, related, on the one hand, to the criticism of the modern way of life in big cities, and, on the other hand, to the new directions of not only economic and technological, but also cultural-historical and recreational-ecological practices in rural areas.
Finally, the question is raised about the possibility of a new mapping of rural spaces for the purpose of a comprehensive assessment of the development of local territories.
