This paper discusses approaches to defining macroregion as a research object, in Russia and Europe. The differences in the macroregionalization conceptions in EU and Russia are examined in three main research discourses: territorial, functional, institutional. It is shown that  macroregion is considered in the domestic tradition by the resource and sectoral principles, and is perceived by all actors as a given from the outside authority; and in the EU - based on the socio-cultural factors of territory identity. Determined the causes of these differences, thefuture directions of research suggested.
