HSE Scientists Train Neural Network to 'Hear' Faults in Electric Motors
Researchers at the AI and Digital Science Institute of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have developed a new method—the Signature-Guided Data Augmentation (SGDA) framework—that achieves 99% accuracy in motor fault detection and 86% accuracy in fault classification. The application of this approach can reduce industrial equipment repair costs, minimise downtime, and improve production safety. The study results have been published in Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence.

Is It Possible to Predict a Citys Life Based on the Shape of Its Neighbourhoods?
Is it possible to predict, based on the configuration of streets and buildings, where a café will open or where traffic congestion will occur? Participants in the Spatial Analysis and Modelling of Urban Processes research and study group use open data and machine learning to identify universal patterns. Alexander Sheludkov and Eduard Somov discuss the purpose of comparing cities, the need for new forms of urban statistics, and how open data is transforming approaches to urban studies.

Benchmark measures of eye movements during reading in Russian children

Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning Memory and Cognition. 2022.
Lopukhina A., Zdorova N., Loshchinina V., Ladinskaya N., Kaprielova A., Goldina S., Vedenina O., Bartseva K., Dragoy O.

In this study, we investigated eye movements during silent reading in 222 typically developing Russian children from grades 1 through 6. First, we established eye-movement benchmarks and detected two periods (between grades 1-2 and grades 3-4) when reading development was the fastest. We compared the basic eye-movement measures in children to those in adults and concluded that neither reached the adults’ level, with the most prominent difference in the probability of skipping and the number of fixations within a word. Second, we investigated the lexical effects of word length, frequency, predictability, and word class, as well as length-by-frequency and frequency-by-predictability interactions on eye movements in children across grades. The results revealed that long, low-frequency, and low-predictability words are read slower and the effect sizes of these lexical features decreased with grade. The effect of word length was larger for high-frequency words, which is opposite to German and Finnish. Also, the facilitative effect of predictability was more prominent for low-frequency words, which is similar to English and opposite to Chinese. Additionally, we found that children read nouns and adjectives faster than other word classes. Third, we tested whether individual differences in phonological processing correlated with eye-movement measures and whether the effect changed with grade. We found that children with better complex phonological skills fixated on words for a shorter period of time. The magnitude of the effect did not change much with grade. The child version of the Russian Sentence Corpus (ChiRSC) is the first systematic description of eye movements during reading in Cyrillic. The annotated ChiRSC is freely

Dorri Sedeh S., Kosonogov V., Kerimova N. et al., Frontiers in Psychology 2026 Vol. 17 Article 1710257
Introduction:  As cities continue to grow, access to natural environments is becoming more limited, contributing to increased stress levels in urban populations. Panoramic 360° videos provide a creative and scalable means of simulating natural environments, potentially reducing stress in city residents under controlled settings. Here, we examined whether short immersive experiences in different urban environments support ...

Novelty, Category and Orientation Tuning for Printed Characters: A Magnetoencephalography Study with Fast Periodic Visual Stimulation
Kochetkova Ekaterina, Kostanian D., Martynova O. et al., Brain Topography 2026 Vol. 39 No. 4 Article 51
Letter recognition is assumed to involve several levels of analysis, including coarse tuning for category and novelty and more fine tuning for specific features, related to letter orientation. We employed an oddball fast periodic visual stimulation (FPVS) paradigm with magnetoencephalography (Elekta VectorView, 306 sensors) to study neural discrimination responses in the source space. Using contrasts ...

Overcoming the Curse of Dimensionality with Synolitic AI
Zaikin A., Sviridov I., Sosedka A. et al., Technologies 2026 Vol. 14 No. 2 Article 84
High-dimensional tabular data are common in biomedical and clinical research, yet conventional machine learning methods often struggle in such settings due to data scarcity, feature redundancy, and limited generalization. In this study, we systematically evaluate Synolitic Graph Neural Networks (SGNNs), a framework that transforms high-dimensional samples into sample-specific graphs by training ensembles of low-dimensional pairwise ...

Kadieva D., Blagoveshchensky E., Agranovich O. et al., Frontiers in Psychology 2026 Vol. 17 Article 1832623
Embodied and embedded cognition (EEC) theory proposes that language and cognitive development emerge from bodily interactions with the environment, yet empirical tests of this claim in clinical developmental populations remain rare. This mini-review synthesizes behavioral, electrophysiological, and structural neuroimaging evidence from children with serious early motor disorders—obstetric brachial plexus palsy and arthrogryposis multiplex congenita—which restrict ...

Juxtapositional vs. possessive-like encoding in Russian specificational constructions
Logvinova N., Russian linguistics 2026 Vol. 50 Article 11
This paper presents the first in-depth corpus-based study of a previously overlooked syntactic variation in Russian: the competition between juxtapositional (Nominative) and possessive-like (Genitive) encoding of the second noun (the term) in specificational constructions (e.g., ponjatie čest’ (notion.NOM honor.NOM) vs. ponjatie česti (notion.NOMhonor.GEN) ‘the notion of honor’). While typological research has established cross-linguistic preferences for one encoding strategy over another, intralinguistic variation ...

In psychology, people's assessment of conditional statements "if--then", agreement and disagreement with them is actively studied. This assessment of people who are not specialists in the field of logic often differs greatly from its requirements, especially if the reality observed by a person to one degree or another contradicts a formally correct logical conclusion. Experimental evidence suggests that null complement anaphora in Russian is not reducible to clausal ellipsis
Knyazev M., Folia Linguistica 2026 Vol. 60 No. 1 P. 453–496
Null complement anaphora, NCA (e.g., I suggested the price was too high, and she agreed ∅.), is a long known but poorly understood phenomenon subject to idiosyncratic lexical restrictions. In languages like Russian, however, it is (or appears) productive, with verbs not allowing NCA hard to nd, raising the question whether omission of the clausal argument ...

Patterns of Cortical Activity in a Silent Single-Word Reading Task Depend on Word Frequency and Age-Related Differences: An MEG Study
Samoylov I., Bolgina T., Lonshakov G. et al., Psychophysiology 2025 Vol. 62 No. 11 Article e70192
This study investigates how word frequency and age modulate the amplitude, temporal, and spatial patterns of cortical activation during silent single-word reading, as measured by magnetoencephalography (MEG). We recorded MEG data from 30 neurotypical adults and 30 typically developing children during a silent reading task involving high-frequency words, low-frequency words, and pseudowords, with cortical activation analyzed using event-related fields (ERF) and ...
