Biologists Discover 'Molecular Fingerprint' of Preeclampsia
Researchers at HSE University employed a new method to model hypoxia in placental cells during pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia and identified molecular markers of tissue hypoxia. Since hypoxia is one of the key mechanisms underlying preeclampsia, these findings are important for a more accurate and timely diagnosis of the disease and for the development of effective treatment methods. The paper has been published in Placenta.

‘Speech, Facial Expressions, and Gestures Cannot Lie
Would you like to know whether a speaker’s trembling voice or an accidental gesture can give them away? At HSE University in Nizhny Novgorod, researchers are developing an algorithm that analyses speech, facial expressions, and gestures, and determines whether information is truthful with 92% accuracy. The project has applications ranging from forensic examination and bank recruitment to fundamental research. Anna Khomenko, head of the research group and Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Language and Brain at the HSE Faculty of Humanities in Nizhny Novgorod, explains how students and researchers are working together to create a corpus of video recordings, train a classifier, and prepare to introduce computer vision technology.

The system of planned, stage-by-stage formation of mental actions (PSFMA) as a creative design of psychological conditions for instruction

Learning, Culture and Social Interaction. 2020. Vol. 25. Article 100273.
Podolskij A.

Piotr Galperin is a representative of cultural-historical psychology and a follower of Lev Vygotsky. His legacy considers the nature of human mental life, its origin and further development in the process of phylogenesis, anthropogenesis and ontogenesis. In addition, Galperin’s contribution was in developing a  system of  psychological conditions, which enables the formation of  mental actions, images and representations with prescribed outcomes. This system is defined as the system of planned stage-by-stage formation of mental actions (PSFMA). Among other applications, PSFMA can be used: i) as a method to study the formation and development of a person’s mental activity, ii) to examine the relationship between the theoretically described and objectively occurring in practice the process of systematic formation of mental functions and iii) to design learning and teaching activity aimed at developing 21st century competences. In this paper, I argue, that the direct transfer and application of the mechanisms of PFSMA in classrooms gives satisfactory results only when the conditions of the theoretically planned formation closely correspond to the conditions of real situations in classrooms. In order to bridge the conditions outlined in PFSMA and the real educational practice, it is necessary to carry out several adjustments to account for the complexity of learning. To do so, three models of instructional design are presented in the paper: i) psy-chological, ii) psychological-pedagogical and iii) procedural or technological model. However, the three-model framework should be considered as an intellectual tool rather than as an algorithm that provides instructions for teachers’ actions.   1. Introduction A young reader, when opening this special issue, will face a difficult task of remembering who is the Russian psychologist Piotr Yakovlevitch Galperin, and understanding why a whole issue of a respected journal has been dedicated to the translation of his lec-tures, which were delivered almost half a century ago. The easiest way to help the reader is to say that Piotr Galperin is a representative of cultural-historical psychology, a follower of the world-known Russian psychologist, philosopher and educationalist Lev Vygotsky. It is indeed the case. However, Galperin’s approach has introduced some new elements to cultural-historical theory. First of all, his approach considers the nature of human mental life, its origin, and further development in the context of phylogenetic, anthropogenic, and ontogenetic processes. Second, it considers the system of psychological conditions, which enables the formation of mental actions, images, and representations with desired and prescribed outcomes. Galperin defined a mental action as a functional structure that is continually being formed and transformed throughout an individual’s lifetime. Using mental actions as well as mental images and representations, a human being plans, regulates, and controls his/her performances by means of socially established patterns, stan-dards, and evaluations (Podolskij, 2008). Moreover, as Galperin reiterated in many publications, the main reason why it was not DOI of original article: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.lcsi.2019.01.006. ☆This article is a reprint of a previously published article. Что такое Свобода? Свобода воли, свободы личности, конституционная модель и законодательное регулирование
Момджян К. Х., Кржевов В. С., Poddiakov A. et al., М.: Новые печатные технологии, 2025.

Self-esteem and self-reported personality traits: When attitudes toward traits make a difference
Shchebetenko S., De Marchis G., / Series PsyArXiv "PsyArXiv". 2026.
Personality questionnaires do not directly record recurring conduct. Rather, they elicit task-bounded reports of personality attributions: how respondents characterise themselves using personality-descriptive content. From this perspective, established associations between self-esteem and self-reported personality may depend on the evaluative meaning attached to that content. We tested whether attitudes toward the Big Five traits moderated associations between self-esteem and corresponding personality reports ...

Pavlova A., Малых С. Б., Адамович Т. В., Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 2026 No. 20 Article 1843779
This study aimed to investigate resting-state neural correlates of math anxiety in high school students using a graph-theoretical approach. Sixty 10th-grade students (35 females; mean age = 16.15 years) participated in the study. Resting-state EEG data were acquired using a 32-channel wireless dry-sensor system (Cognionics Quick-32 series). Math anxiety was assessed using the Abbreviated Math Anxiety Scale. Mean ...

Hypergraphs from multivariate connectivity: caCOH-based EEG/MEG representation
Vlasenko D., Saranskaia I., Zakharov D., European Physical Journal: Special Topics 2026 P. 1–16
Hypergraphs provide a natural framework for representing neurophysiological interactions distributed across sets of sensors. A key methodological question is how hyperedges should be defined from frequency-resolved electroencephalography/magnetoencephalography (EEG/MEG) data. We demonstrate a construction strategy in which hyperedges are obtained from canonical coherence (caCOH), an extension of coherence that estimates coupling between multidimensional signal spaces. To ...
