The article analyzes the relation between sharing innovative technology ideas and encouraging an innovation-driven economy. The main objective is to identify the trends in the causal links between these phenomena. The relevance of the issue is accounted for by the need to select political tools for encouraging economic modernization and transition to innovative development. The VAR model and Granger test is applied for processing the Russian data with special attention be paid to the categories of patents and trade areas.
