Чередование в корне как залог устойчивости: из истории сильных глаголов в немецком языке

This paper describes inflectional class change in the course of the  history of German. This process is interpreted as child-based language change. I argue that the transition of strong (irregular) verbs into weak (regular) conjugation is governed by different factors, the most important being frequency and paradigm structure, namely the presence or absence of alternations in the present tense. If there are alternations, the verb is more likely to be memorized as a strong one by native learners, which increases its chances of retaining the irregular paradigm.
