Environmentally Safe Techniques In The Recycling Of Mercury-containing Materials

WIT Transactions on Ecology and The Environment. 2014. Vol. 190. P. 551–556.
Maslennikova I., Kovalev V., Eronko O., Grishchenko T.

Protection of the environment can be achieved by creating conditions that ensure the complete absence, or at least minimal content, of hazardous substances in industrial waste. Therefore, in production processes where the main and/or additive product is material with mercury content, the prevention of mercury vapor emissions into the atmosphere is an essential prerequisite for safety and environmental protection. However, achieving these indispensable safety conditions requires significant energy input. Detailed analysis of existing techniques and equipment for mercury extraction from mercury-containing and mercury-contaminated materials as well as plastics containing waste showed that all of the proposed methods are energy-intensive and cannot entirely remove mercury vapor from the emissions. A new technique of the thermal demercurization of mercury-containing materials has been offered. The original feature of the proposed technique is the distillation and condensation of mercury vapor within an inert gas flow circulating in the closed loop system. The offered technique ensures a substantial reduction in energy consumption while cooling the mercury vapor for its condensation and almost entirely eliminates mercury emissions into the atmosphere. Keywords: recycling of mercury-containing materials, environmental protection, energy consumption, thermal demercurization, inert gas flow, closed gas loop system, closed liquid loop system.

Biochemical Foundations of Emotion Regulation: Implications for Pharmacological and Psychological Interventions-A Narrative Review
Gerges M., Kosonogov V., OBM Neurobiology 2025 Vol. 9 No. 4 Article 310
Emotion regulation (ER) involves processes by which individuals modulate the intensity, duration, and expression of emotional responses, and its dysregulation is associated with a broad spectrum of psychological disorders. While traditionally conceptualized within psychological frameworks, ER is increasingly recognized as biologically grounded, involving intricate interactions between neurochemical, hormonal, and metabolic systems. This narrative review aims ...

Motor imagery perspective shapes corticospinal excitability with effector-specific effects
Feurra M., Perevoznyuk G., Ragimova A. et al., Scientific Reports 2026 No. 16 Article 13098 (2026)
Motor imagery (MI) allows individuals to mentally simulate movements without execution, engaging neural pathways that overlap with those used during real actions. However, how imagery perspective influences corticospinal excitability across different effectors remains unclear. Using neuronavigated transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), we compared kinesthetic (KMI), first-person visual (VMI-1PP), and third-person visual (VMI-3PP) imagery of elbow flexion-extension ...

Persistent illegal sturgeon fishing in the Caspian Sea
Ermolin I., Suvorkov P., Conservation Biology 2026 No. e70300 P. 1–10
Illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing driven by artisanal small-scale fisheries is a critical threat to global biodiversity and is exemplified by the commercial extinction of Caspian sturgeons (Acipenser and Huso). A key knowledge gap persists regarding the scale and behavioral dynamics of these operations. We tested the hypothesis that persistent high-volume sturgeon poaching is sustained ...

Quantifying and Modelling the Effect of Cloud Shadows on the Surface Irradiance at Tropical and Midlatitude Forests
Кивалов С. Н., Fitzjarrald D., Boundary-Layer Meteorology 2018 Vol. 166 No. 2 P. 165–198
Cloud shadows lead to alternating light and dark periods at the surface, with the most abrupt changes occurring in the presence of low-level forced cumulus clouds. We examine multiyear irradiance time series observed at a research tower in a midlatitude mixed deciduous forest (Harvard Forest, Massachusetts, USA: 42.53◦N, 72.17◦W) and one made at a similar tower in a tropical ...

Sergey N. Kivalov, Dušek J., Czerný R. et al., Boundary-Layer Meteorology 2023 Vol. 186 P. 217–250
We examined the net-ecosystem-exchange (NEE)-based annual carbon-balance estimates obtained from eddy-covariance (EC) measurements at an unmanaged sedge-grass marsh ecosystem (Tˇreboˇn, Czech Republic, 49°1′ N, 14°46′ E), seeking methods to improve the EC measurements in inhomogeneous environment. The data filtering procedure was developed using three thresholds: (a) a stationarity test; (b) a stability u∗-threshold; and (c) a high relative humidity RH-threshold. ...

Identifying optimal cloud cover for enhanced forest carbon uptake: Periodic-case NEE-overshoot modelling
Sergey N Kivalov, Ecological Modelling 2024 Vol. 498 Article 110904
On certain kinds of cloudy days, many forested ecosystems exhibit enhanced carbon uptake and water-use efficiency-the cloudy-day forest flux anomaly. Using ensemble methods to analyze eddy-covariance fluxes, we have diagnosed net ecosystem exchange (NEE) and water-use efficiency (WUE) of a temperate broadleaf forest and a tropical evergreen forest as they responded to natural fluctuating-light regimes. Here we ...

Ising models on the hydrogen peroxide and other lattices
Qin X., Deng Y., Shchur L. et al., / Series arXiv "math". 2026. No. 2603.02962.
We perform a Monte Carlo analysis of the Ising model on many three-dimensional lattices. By means of finite-size scaling we obtain the critical points and determine the scaling dimensions. As expected, the critical exponents agree with the three-dimensional Ising universality class for all models. The irrelevant field, as revealed by the correction-to-scaling amplitudes, appears to ...

We investigate the boundary separating regular and chaotic dynamics in the generalized Chirikov map, an extension of the standard map with phase-shifted secondary kicks. Lyapunov maps were computed across the parameter space (K,K(α, τ)) and used to train a convolutional neural network (ResNet18) for binary classification of dynamical regimes. The model reproduces the known critical ...
