This article examines Irish November 5th sermons published between 1691 and 1711. These government-issued texts are considered as instruments for shaping cultural memory and symbolic authority. Through teleological narratives grounded in a substantive philosophy of history, preachers drew parallels between biblical stories and the situation of Protestants in Ireland, transforming sacred history into lessons and prophecies that legitimized the existing order. In this context, the sermon became a form of symbolic violence, reinforcing ideas about the historical place of Irish Anglicans. The analysis of six officially published sermons demonstrates how their content – from exhortations to obedience to rhetoric of religious tolerance – shifted in response to changing political circumstances.
